A Terrifying Night in Harlem
For Harlem, tonight was destined to be a sleepless night.
Hulk failed to show up as promised, but Abomination was far more punctual.
After all, he was a trained soldier with a strong sense of time, not a scientist who worked day and night once he got started.
What a good boy.
Gebang Academy was too small and too sparsely populated. Even if he smashed things everywhere, the impact would not be too great. Besides, such an open area was easier for the military to surround. It was not suitable for Blonsky, who was determined to cause trouble.
The most suitable place was, of course, a residential district or a bustling downtown area!
He had not actually intended to kill indiscriminately. He merely wanted to make a big enough mess to draw General Ross over.
The situation had already come to this. The ones responsible for it were three bastards:
General Ross, who had injected himself with an imperfect version of the Super Soldier Serum; Dr. Sterns, who had injected him with Hulk serum and exposed him to Gamma Rays; and Hulk, who had provided the tools for the crime.
Unlike Hulk, even after transforming, his mind remained clear. He knew Dr. Sterns had nothing to do with this. The man had been forced into it. The other two were the real culprits, especially Hulk.
I became this way and can’t even change back because of that bastard!
As the most elite special forces soldier, he understood his current situation very well.
To those big shots at the peak of power, he was a weapon. Perhaps a weapon against terrorists, perhaps one against political rivals. They would definitely want to control him rather than destroy him, so his life was not in much danger.
He could not fight the entire world alone. He had to find partners.
Dr. Sterns was one.
General Ross was another.
Killing too many people would make things hard to clean up, so he only intended to smash things around and lure Ross over.
If he could turn back into a human like Hulk, he would definitely choose more discreet methods, such as investigating in secret or contacting General Ross privately.
But looking like this, he definitely could not show his face. It was all Hulk’s fault!
Most importantly, he did not want to be controlled by others. He only wanted to seize the initiative.
Smashing through The Laboratory window, Blonsky locked onto the loudest, liveliest direction and charged toward it.
"God, what is that?"
"So tall, so muscular… could it be Hulk?"
"Wasn’t he at Culver University? Why did he come to Gebang Academy? The general gave the order only two hours ago. We were told to ignore Hulk and just keep an eye on Dr. Sterns."
"Most of the troops the general deployed have already withdrawn. We… can’t beat it!"
"What are you standing around for? Report to the general and request reinforcements!"
"Wait… are you sure that’s Hulk? It’s clearly brown!"
"Uh, can Hulk put on makeup?"
"You, go check The Laboratory and see what happened. Is Dr. Sterns still alive?"
The soldiers guarding The Laboratory stood there dumbfounded.
They had watched a massive piece of metal equipment fly out of a second-floor laboratory window. The two patrolling soldiers below had no time to react before they were flattened.
Then a brown monster jumped down, bent its knees and hunched over, then leaped directly onto the roof twenty meters away and vanished in an instant.
"K3 calling the captain!"
"A brown monster killed two of our brothers. Blonsky and Dr. Sterns are still in The Laboratory!"
"We caught up with it!"
"It caught up with us… ah!"
Towering flames lit up half of Gebang Academy. No one knew how many cars had been casually smashed apart. Flowing gasoline ignited and mixed with unknown gases from The Laboratory, triggering a massive explosion unlike anything seen in decades and waking all of Harlem.
General Ross was in a very good mood.
The second injection had gone smoothly. Blonsky was in good condition, and the test results were ideal:
His physical abilities had increased again, reaching four times their original level. He was no worse than Captain America. If the two fought head-on, it was still unclear who would win.
Thinking of Captain America made him think of the Avengers Initiative, S.H.I.E.L.D., and Nick Fury.
"You have Captain America, but I have Blonsky!"
"There is only one Captain America, but there can be ten Blonskys, a hundred Blonskys, a thousand Blonskys!"
"The Avengers Initiative? Heh heh!"
General Ross sneered.
He no longer thought much of the Avengers Initiative. He planned to establish his own Super Hero force.
"Thunderbolt Agents… that’s a good name!"
At the thought of soon having his own Super Hero force, with not three or five members but dozens or hundreds, he became so excited that he would not feel sleepy even after three days and nights without rest.
Such good news naturally had to be shared. The first person General Ross thought of was his archenemy, Dr. Banner, along with that daughter of his who always sided with outsiders.
"Put me through to the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and… damn, that’s hard to remember… Director Wang of the Shengun Bureau!"
The call connected quickly, and Old Wang’s lazy voice came through. "General Ross, why aren’t you sleeping in the middle of the night? What are you up to… that’s quite a racket. Let me guess… you didn’t fly overnight to Gebang Academy, did you?"
Ross’s eyelids sank.
Sure enough, the Shengun Bureau had its eyes on Dr. Sterns too!
Why had he rushed over to see Dr. Sterns overnight instead of sleeping after cleaning up the mess at Culver University?
It was to guard against you and Fury, you two bastards!
"Director Wang, Dr. Samuel Sterns has already been requisitioned by the military. This matter has been approved by the Minister of Defense." He hurriedly reminded him in a deep voice, the meaning clear:
I have powerful people backing me. If you dare interfere, we’ll settle this at the Pentagon!
"Don’t get worked up, don’t get worked up. I’m not interested in Dr. Sterns. You want him to lead the Super Soldier Program? That’s a good thing. For the welfare of all mankind, I represent the Shengun Bureau in giving it our full support."
Old Wang yawned and said knowingly, "General, you definitely aren’t looking for me, right? Hold on… Skye, transfer the call to Dr. Banner and his girlfriend."
"Mm… all right."
Skye stretched lazily.
The call was quickly transferred.
Banner had not wanted to answer, but Betty clearly hoped that her boyfriend and father would reconcile. Her eyes were full of expectation as she looked at Banner.
Thinking of Director Wang’s promise that he might truly be able to live a normal life in the future, Banner saw no reason to fall out with his future father-in-law. Only then did he answer the phone. "General."
"Dr. Banner."
The moment Ross heard Banner’s voice, his mood worsened.
He snorted.
Just as he was about to say something, the captain beside him reported quietly, "Monster, it’s a call from Vice Captain Kyle. You’d better hear it yourself."
General Ross had been about to lose his temper. How dare someone interrupt his mockery and boasting?
But the moment he saw the captain’s expression, he knew something was wrong. He quickly put on his headset and heard Vice Captain Kyle shouting through it:
"Brown Hulk is on the streets! I repeat, Brown Hulk is on the streets!"
Hulk?
A brown Hulk?
Hulk was on the phone with him right now. How could he be on the streets of Harlem? And he was green, not brown. Kyle, were you colorblind? How had you passed the military physical? We’re the Air Force!
"Impossible! Stay calm, Vice Captain Kyle! Tell me your location now!"
He looked at the pilot. "How much longer until we reach Harlem?"
The pilot hurriedly replied, "Two minutes, General!"
"General, we’re at 121st Street and North Broadway! Requesting support, requesting support!" Vice Captain Kyle shouted.
General Ross’s heart sank. "Speed up! Connect me to the live feed!"
"Yes, General!"
The video appeared quickly.
Seeing the building that had nearly been smashed into ruins, the massive chain collision clogging the street, and the brown giant hopping from house to house and smashing cars like toys, Ross was stunned.
Where had this thing come from?
Had Dr. Sterns made it?
Could it be…
"Ross! Banner!"
A furious roar came through the headset, sending cold sweat all over Ross’s body.
Blonsky. It was actually Blonsky!
The sleepy General Ross instantly had all his fatigue wiped away upon hearing those words. His heart, which had been tormented countless times, clenched tightly. "How could it be him?"
I told him to go to Gebang Academy to cooperate with the experiment. I never told him to inject Hulk serum!
What… what was he supposed to do now?
His panic lasted only twenty seconds before reason crushed it.
Years of military service had given General Ross a mind far calmer than most and a decisiveness that killed without hesitation.
Harlem was a predominantly Black district with a huge population. If Blonsky was allowed to continue like this, no one knew how many would die. Hundreds, thousands, perhaps even more.
This would shock the entire world. Even the President and the United Nations would intervene directly!
And Ross could not withstand any investigation.
Hulk had been created by him.
The Super Soldier Program had been halted five years ago, and the remaining serum had been cryogenically sealed. At the time, the situation had been urgent, and he had not had time to argue with every department. So, without applying for permission, he had used it directly and injected Blonsky.
Dr. Sterns was under his control. Some in the military had advocated destroying all Hulk serum and sealing away all related research materials, but Ross had firmly opposed them. He had intended to restart the Super Soldier Program once again, with Dr. Sterns in charge.
He had thought Blonsky’s second injection had gone well. As long as he cooperated with Dr. Sterns’s research and tests, they could produce an even more perfect Super Soldier Serum, strengthening his influence in the military and even at the Pentagon.
But now…
Forget it. I definitely can’t stay in the military anymore. I can only move into politics.
Blonsky must be dealt with, or my opponents will definitely send me to a military court!
A chain of thoughts flashed through General Ross’s mind, and he quickly made his decision.
The military and police in Harlem could not handle Blonsky. Neither could S.H.I.E.L.D. nor the Avengers Initiative.
There was only one choice.
He grabbed the phone beside him and roared into it, "Director Wang, I know you’re listening! Please go to Harlem immediately…"
"Harlem?"
Before he could finish, Old Wang’s voice followed. "I’m already here."
