A Wolf That Looked Like a Husky
The lifeboat broke through the mist. Russell closed his eyes and only slowly opened them after adjusting to the light. Having passed through the storm and mist, he realized it was already dawn outside.
Ahead lay a reef-strewn stretch of sea, jagged rocks scattered darkly across the surface. Beyond the reefs stood an island covered in towering ancient trees, exuding an air of age and desolation.
Dense ancient trees stood around the island and stretched into the distance. Rolling mountains created a primeval landscape, and even from afar, they could still hear beastly roars rising from the island now and then.
The fish school dragged the lifeboat onward, passing through gaps between enormous reefs and successfully reaching the beach at the island’s edge.
Ying Yingying slung two backpacks over herself, one in front and one behind. At four foot seven, she was practically weighed down to her knees by the two huge bags, looking as pitiful as could be.
Russell was completely unburdened and saw nothing wrong with it. Ying Yingying only looked small; before switching to magic, she had been an assassin and warrior. Her speed, strength, and explosive power far surpassed those of an adult man, so two backpacks were effortless for her.
"Hey, you. I still don’t know your name. I can’t keep calling you ‘hey, you,’ can I?" Ying Yingying asked through gritted teeth, planning to remember her enemy’s name so she could pay him a visit with a group someday.
"Jason!"
"Who’d believe a name that common?" Ying Yingying muttered under her breath.
The two crossed the beach, leaving behind two rows of footprints, one large and one small. The sea immediately surged in behind them and erased the tracks, then swept away the lifeboat without a trace, leaving no evidence that anyone had landed there.
The island was isolated from the outside world. Apart from extraordinarily unlucky people, no outsiders had ever set foot here. Tens of thousands of years of isolation had created a unique ecosystem.
Towering ancient trees blocked out the sky, each one thick enough that at least five people would be needed to encircle it. In their struggle for living space, their root systems had become incredibly developed. Many roots as thick as arms protruded from the earth, tangling and spreading in layers in every direction.
Fortunately, although the giant trees were tall and their branches lush, there was relatively wide spacing between them, so the light was not too dim. The damp soil was covered in ferns, while dead branches and fallen leaves carpeted the ground in a thick layer, giving off a rotten smell.
The exposed rocks were covered in green moss, and every step felt incredibly slippery, severely affecting their walking speed.
"Jason, I have a Flying Carpet in my Space Ring. It’s fast and steady," Ying Yingying suggested. In the distance, savage beast roars rang out, startling flocks of birds from the forest. Every sign indicated that this primeval jungle was filled with danger.
"No need. Kids need more exercise if they want to grow taller and faster!"
Russell trudged over the rotten leaves, stepping high and low. With a crack, he snapped a dead branch beneath his foot. He frowned deeply. Wandering around like this without any direction was no solution, so he checked the cards in his inventory and used one.
Skill Card: Summon Dog (A daoist with fifteen dogs can swagger across the whole server)With Ying Yingying standing beside him, Russell put on a show and muttered a few incantations. With a wave of his hand, a brilliant summoning circle immediately lit up on the ground ahead.
The visual effect was incredibly stunning, far beyond the cheap special effects of knockoff browser games. Russell felt rather ashamed. He had accidentally shown off again.
Ying Yingying raised a hand to shield her eyes as the loud howl of hungry wolves rang in her ears. But when the light gradually faded and she saw Russell’s summons, her whole world fell apart.
One, two, three, four, five… Fifteen whole Huskies sat in place, arranged in three rows and five columns. The scene was utterly brutal.
Russell: "…"
Watching the pack of Huskies that had just howled at the sky return to their true nature, wagging their tails and sticking out their tongues at him, Russell’s mindset nearly collapsed.
What the hell did "swagger across the whole server" mean? What could fifteen Huskies even do? Tear down the island?
He could think that in his heart, but he absolutely could not show it. Otherwise, this would be humiliating beyond belief.
Russell coughed lightly and gave the Huskies their orders in a steady voice. "Search this jungle. If you see any living humans walking on two legs, come back and report immediately. If you don’t find anyone, return to my side regularly too. Don’t get lost, understand?"
"…"
There was no response. Some Huskies wagged their tails, while others lifted their hind legs to scratch themselves. Not one was listening to Russell. They had absolutely no discipline.
"Good. Since you all understood, hurry up and carry out the mission. On my command, disperse!"
Russell waved his hand, and all fifteen Huskies flopped onto the ground together, curling their limbs and exposing their fluffy bellies.
Ying Yingying: ( ̄_, ̄)
"Disperse!"
"Woof woof woof!"
Ying Yingying: (ノへ ̄,)
The veins on Russell’s forehead throbbed. He took two deep breaths to calm his nearly exploding mindset, then pulled out his Desert Eagle and fired a shot into the sky.
Bang!
"Disperse!"
"Awwooo! Awwooo! Woo woo woo—"
Birds and beasts scattered in all directions. The fifteen frightened Dog Pack members bolted at full speed, leaving none behind. In the blink of an eye, they vanished into the depths of the jungle.
The atmosphere was somewhat awkward. Russell took out a bottle of mineral water from the backpack in front of Ying Yingying and drank it in small sips.
"Jason, those were Huskies just now, right?"
"No. They were wolves that looked like Huskies," Russell replied calmly. Sometimes in life, one had to lie through one’s teeth. It was better for everyone.
"Wolves don’t wag their tails, they don’t bark, and they definitely don’t look that stupid!" Ying Yingying’s face darkened. Russell’s image as an expert plummeted in her eyes. As someone he had defeated, she felt deeply ashamed.
"That’s why I said they were wolves that looked like Huskies!"
"Let me warn you first: Huskies are also known as ‘let go and they’re gone.’ Once they leave, they probably won’t come back."
"They’re wolves!"
"Argh! Give me the Space Ring already! I want to ride the Flying Carpet!" Ying Yingying frantically clawed at her hair, then opened her backpack, took out milk and bread, and wolfed them down.
The little girl was inexperienced and had never seen much of the world, so she could not tell the difference between wolves and Huskies. Russell did not want to argue with her. He said he needed to take a leak, then turned and walked behind a huge boulder.
He took out a skeleton from his Space Ring, spoils from his last trip to the Main God Space. It was the remains of a Reincarnator who had enhanced himself with Wolverine’s abilities.
Russell opened his mouth and chanted an incantation, placing Jason’s soul into it. Before long, flesh and blood grew over the skeleton, and a naked Jason stood up.
Jason: (._.)
Russell took out a Repairman’s uniform, a white mask, and a Dogleg Saber, then handed them over. He had found them on the cruise ship.
"Go stealthily and look for living people. That’s your specialty. If you find them, don’t alert them. Come back immediately and tell me."
Jason put on the uniform and mask. He was not very satisfied with the Dogleg Saber, but after giving it a swing, he tucked it into the back of his belt. Then he strode into the jungle and instantly vanished into stealth.
