Becoming a Father Out of the Blue
"…"
"Um, you really can’t tell…"
Chen Mu scratched his head awkwardly. Looking at Xu Jia’s flat stomach, he felt a little embarrassed.
"Because I couldn’t get in touch with you, I didn’t know what to do."
Xu Jia glared at Chen Mu and spoke angrily.
You were unbelievable. After doing something like that, you had simply walked away. Xu Jia probably had no idea what to do about Chen Mu’s child either, so she could only carry on with her life as though nothing had happened.
She had been terrified that Chen Mu might leave for ten years or more. What would she do once the child was born?
"What should we do? Isn’t it obvious? Have the baby!"
Chen Mu rubbed his nose. He was not the sort of man who shirked responsibility. Since it was his child, of course they had to keep it!
Still, the whole thing felt absurd to Chen Mu. From his perspective, he had been gone for less than ten minutes, yet upon returning, Xu Jia told him that he was going to be a father. It was utterly surreal.
However, Chen Mu’s body had already been modified. He had become an almost immortal member of the Celestial Race, so perhaps their child would need ten years in Xu Jia’s womb before it could be born.
Well, what kind of situation was this?
Then again, in mythology, Nezha seemed to have been carried by his mother for more than three years before being born. The longer the gestation period, the stronger the life that was born.
Xu Jia had apparently already been pregnant for two years. It seemed that their future child might be even stronger than the Nezha from mythology.
Even if the child were ordinary, Chen Mu had countless ways to make them strong. Of course, the simplest method would be to directly transform the child into a member of the Celestial Race like himself. Then there would be no problem.
"…"
Xu Jia looked at Chen Mu resentfully. You made it sound so easy.
"Cough, cough. Well, let’s find a good day and get married. Since we’re having a child, we should at least make it official, right?"
For some reason, Chen Mu felt terribly guilty under Xu Jia’s gaze.
Xu Jia knew about him fooling around with Tony Stark.
As a "scumbag," Chen Mu had originally planned to hide for a couple of years and hoped the matter would simply blow over. Who could have expected that after coming back, he would discover something even more embarrassing?
He was going to be a father. Although it might still be several years away, Chen Mu was suddenly at a complete loss.
He had lived two lives and had never experienced anything like this!
Now, he truly had no idea what to do.
"Hmph. Let’s not talk about this for now. I need to get back to work."
Xu Jia snorted and prepared to lower her head and continue with her work, unwilling to pay Chen Mu any more attention.
She regretted it somewhat. In truth, she had always liked Chen Mu. Even when he had been an ordinary, unremarkable man, he had been willing to devote himself selflessly to his country. To Xu Jia, that was the brightest thing about him.
Although Chen Mu had plenty of minor flaws, they were not unbearable. No one was perfect, and compared to many others, Chen Mu was already quite good.
He had fooled around with Tony Stark, but for a man, that was not something entirely unacceptable.
Looking at the current era, Chen Mu was far more restrained than most men.
When Chen Mu had first provided his technology, the country had investigated his background. Therefore, Xu Jia understood his character very well.
He seemed to have had two girlfriends while he was in school, but that was all. After graduating, although he had idled around every day, he had never done anything wrong.
Although he was a minor second-generation rich kid, Chen Mu had never put on the airs of one. He was simply more withdrawn than many people.
The only time Xu Jia knew of Chen Mu seeking out women was when she had gone with him to America to visit Tony, and Tony had taken him out to date Cover Girls. That was not really much of anything. Compared to most men, he was far better.
"Don’t. You’re pregnant now, so you should rest properly for a while."
Now that he knew Xu Jia was pregnant, how could Chen Mu still let her work? He hurried over with a fawning smile and said, "Well, leave the work to someone else. Let’s take a proper rest."
Chen Mu quickly followed after her, rubbing her shoulders and massaging her legs.
Well, the tables had turned. Now it was Chen Mu’s turn to take care of Xu Jia.
Leaving aside Chen Mu’s unexpected impending fatherhood, in an underground S.H.I.E.L.D. base in America, Nick Fury was throwing a tantrum.
"Those selfish Chinese people found the secret to human evolution, yet they’re keeping it to themselves instead of making it public for the benefit of all humanity?"
Nick Fury slammed his fist onto the table. Over the past two years, he had gone to China several times, each time intending to obtain the secret of the Evolved People’s evolution. Yet every trip had ended in failure, with no results whatsoever.
"…"
Hill stood nearby with an expressionless face. She did not want to speak, but she knew perfectly well that getting China to share the technology was simply impossible.
Not to mention anything else, if America possessed this technology, would America share it?
Obviously not.
By the same logic, how could they expect China to hand over the technology?
That was no way to daydream.
"Have you conducted any research on China’s Evolved People?"
Nick Fury and Hill took an elevator down toward the deeper research levels, and he did not forget to ask.
"Every Chinese Evolved Person possesses tremendous power, and they are all protected by China. We have no opportunity at all."
Hill desperately wanted to study those Chinese Evolved People, but nowadays, these Chinese people rarely appeared abroad anymore.
China’s social welfare was now better than that of most other countries. Moreover, China was developing outer space and was in desperate need of manpower. Many Evolved People had secretly gone to work in outer space.
Other than those studying or conducting business abroad, what Evolved Person would go overseas for no reason?
Of course, some might go abroad to chase women or travel, but with their own immense strength and China backing them, these Evolved People had nothing to worry about.
"Still no way to contact Chen Mu?"
Inside the elevator, Nick Fury asked again, unwilling to give up.
"We suspect he went into outer space. We haven’t received any news about him for two years."
Hill spoke calmly.
"Just as I thought. The technology China has obtained must have come from aliens. Those selfish Chinese people only care about China’s development. They do not care about the whole world at all. They have no awareness of themselves as human beings."
