Chapter 22: General Qin’s Phone Call
"Who dares to make an arrest?"
Just as several police officers were about to rush forward and handcuff Zhou Lang, Qin Pojun spoke up. Zhou Lang had cured his grandfather's leg, making him a benefactor; Qin Pojun had no intention of letting Zhou Lang handle such a trivial matter himself.
"Who are you? If you dare to obstruct the police in the execution of their duties, I'll arrest you along with him," the chubby Officer Liu, who was leading the group, glared at Qin Pojun and said.
"Arrests require evidence, don't they? Nie Yuanxiong struck first; I was merely acting in self-defense," Zhou Lang said calmly. From a legal standpoint, he was in the right. Moreover, given General Qin's influence, he had nothing to worry about. This was the perfect opportunity to teach that pair of scoundrels, Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian, a good lesson.
"I say you hit someone, so you hit someone. Young Master Nie is the son of Deputy Mayor Nie, so don't be so ignorant of the situation," Officer Liu said arrogantly. His abuse of power had reached a completely unscrupulous level.
"Can the son of a deputy mayor stand above the law?" At this, General Qin slammed his hand on the table and stood up. They had fought to build this nation, but he never imagined that these so-called "red-blooded" successors would turn out to be so disgraceful. How could he not be furious?
"Old man, you dare to act tough in front of me? Do you want to go to jail too?" Officer Liu was enraged and shouted at his subordinates, "It seems they're all in this together. Handcuff them all!"
"Stop!" General Qin shouted coldly.
"Old man, it's too late to beg for mercy now," Nie Yuanxiong laughed triumphantly. "Don't blame your bad luck; blame yourself for getting to know a loser like Zhou Lang. He pestered Young Miss Ye Qianqian and offended Young Master Nie, so you'll all have to suffer for it."
"So you are Nie Yuanxiong. I will call your Municipal Party Secretary to see if he gave you the privilege to run wild in Feiyun City," General Qin said slowly. The arrogance and tyranny of Nie Yuanxiong and these police officers had already infuriated this founding general.
"Old man, quit trying to scare people here. Don't tell me Secretary Lei is your son, haha." Nie Yuanxiong laughed and winked at Officer Liu. He didn't believe for a second that General Qin was anyone of status.
Officer Liu waved his hand, and his seven subordinates prepared to move in.
"Handcuff them all," General Qin said to his four bodyguards.
The four bodyguards, efficient and synchronized, stood up from the table in one swift motion.
"You want to resist arrest?" one of the officers shouted.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
General Qin's four bodyguards pounced on the four officers like fierce tigers.
The four officers were kicked away and sent sprawling to the ground before they could even see how their attackers moved.
The other three officers were stunned and were instantly knocked to the ground as well.
These four bodyguards were all experts at the Master level. While they were no match for a Cultivator like Zhou Lang, dealing with these police officers was incredibly easy.
"You actually assaulted the police! I'll shoot you!"
This scene was something Nie Yuanxiong, Ye Qianqian, and Officer Liu had not anticipated. Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian were scared pale, while Officer Liu, putting on a brave front, roared and reached for the service pistol at his waist.
"Shut your mouth!"
But Officer Liu's action didn't get any further. One of General Qin's bodyguards snatched a pair of handcuffs from an officer, flashed to his side, and grabbed his hands. Despite his large frame, Officer Liu had absolutely no power to resist; his arms were twisted behind his back, and he was handcuffed in an instant.
His seven subordinates didn't fare any better; within just a dozen seconds, they were all handcuffed, and their service pistols were confiscated.
"You'd best all squat in the corner and don't try to run. Otherwise, they will snap your necks or blow your brains out with your own guns," Qin Pojun said coldly, looking at the eight men, including Officer Liu.
"Who exactly are you people?"
Officer Liu asked with some fear. He was a small squad leader in the Feiyun City Criminal Investigation Team. Previously, he had been secretly pleased to have the chance to stand up for Nie Yuanxiong, but now, he felt like dying.
"Why are you talking so much? Didn't you understand what I said?" Qin Pojun scolded.
Officer Liu became frightened and was the first to squat in the corner, though he was so fat that squatting down was quite difficult.
The other seven officers saw that their leader didn't dare to disobey Qin Pojun, so how could they dare to act out? One by one, they obediently squatted in the corner, looking just like prisoners of war.
Nie Yuanxiong, whose face had gone pale with fright, and Ye Qianqian, who was trembling all over, didn't dare to speak at all. They never imagined that the people dining with Zhou Lang were all such ruthless characters—they even dared to beat up the police. After an exchange of glances, the pair of scoundrels decided that running away was the best strategy and prepared to sneak out of the private room.
"If you don't want to be handcuffed or have your legs broken, then stay right here. Of course, don't try to make any phone calls, or you'll bear the consequences," Zhou Lang spoke up this time.
"Zhou Lang, what are you doing? You've detained the police here. Do you know what a huge crime you've committed? Do you want to go to prison or be executed by firing squad?"
Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian stopped in their tracks, not daring to leave, but that idiot Nie Yuanxiong still wanted to try and intimidate them.
"Didn't you think you were above the law earlier?" General Qin sneered. "Why are you talking to us about the law now? In a moment, someone will have a proper discussion about the law with you."
With that, he took out his phone and made a call.
…
Inside the living room of Building No. 1 in the Municipal Committee compound, a middle-aged man around fifty, with his hair combed meticulously, was sitting on the sofa watching TV. Beside him was a beautiful woman in her early forties.
"Brother Lei, it's been a long time since we went out to relax. How about we go on a trip next weekend?" the beautiful young woman asked the fifty-year-old man.
"Wife, now that I'm the Municipal Party Secretary, I wouldn't say I'm managing a thousand things a day, but I'm swamped with work every day. I don't know if I'll have time next weekend."
The fifty-year-old man said, "Actually, sometimes when I think about it, I feel quite guilty because I spend so little time with you. However, since I'm in this position, I must serve as an official properly. I can only wrong you."
"Brother Lei, I understand. We can talk about the trip when you have time. I'm already very satisfied that you can get off work early to come home and watch TV with me," the beautiful young woman smiled slightly.
This couple was no simple pair. This fifty-year-old man was none other than Secretary Lei Gang, the Municipal Party Secretary of Feiyun City, and the beautiful woman was his wife, Leng Xinyue.
"Alright, tonight I'll turn off my phone. I won't go to any social engagements; I'll just stay with you." Secretary Lei Gang pulled Leng Xinyue into his arms and said softly, then reached for his phone, intending to turn it off.
But at that moment, his phone rang at a very inopportune time.
"Who's calling? I guess what you just said won't be honored," Leng Xinyue sighed.
"I'm not answering anyone's call tonight," Lei Gang insisted. But when he looked at the caller ID, his expression changed instantly, and he muttered, "It's actually the Old Chief's call!"
"Which Old Chief?" Leng Xinyue asked, puzzled.
"Which other Old Chief could I have? It's General Qin," Lei Gang said.
"Then you'd better answer the phone," Leng Xinyue urged.
"Wife, this isn't me breaking my word; you're the one who told me to answer it," Lei Gang laughed.
"At a time like this, what are you joking about? You're so slow to answer the phone; be careful or the Old Chief will tear you a new one," Leng Xinyue said.
Lei Gang quickly pressed the answer button on his phone.
"Yes, Old Chief, I'll be there immediately!"
A moment later, Lei Gang stood up from the sofa, straightened his back, and said loudly, as if receiving a military order. His expression had turned serious.
"The Old Chief wants you to go to the capital? Is he critically ill?" Leng Xinyue's expression changed.
"What are you talking about? The Old Chief has come to our Feiyun City. He's currently in Private Room No. 1 at the Nanshan State Guesthouse. He's encountered a bit of trouble and wants me to go over immediately," Lei Gang said.
"Then I'm coming with you," Leng Xinyue said.
She and Lei Gang had both been soldiers under General Qin in the past and held extraordinary feelings for him. Upon learning that General Qin had come to Feiyun City, they naturally had to rush over immediately.
They knew that General Qin suffered from a leg ailment and that the chances of him coming to Feiyun City in the future were very slim. What they didn't know was that General Qin's leg had basically recovered under Zhou Lang's treatment.
"Then go change your clothes immediately," Lei Gang said.
…
"Brother Zhou, let's continue eating. Someone will come to handle this matter in a while," General Qin said to Zhou Lang after finishing his call.
Soon, they continued eating, leaving Nie Yuanxiong, Ye Qianqian, and the eight police officers completely ignored on the side.
"Zhou Lang, you actually dare to detain me. Once my father finds out, you're dead meat," Nie Yuanxiong, still unaware of General Qin's identity, said bitterly after seeing General Qin and Zhou Lang treating him like thin air.
"You think your father is a big shot, right? He'll be here in a while. I'd like to see just how remarkable a deputy mayor can be," General Qin glanced at Nie Yuanxiong and said with a slight smile.
"What do you mean?" Nie Yuanxiong didn't understand at all.
"With your IQ, you certainly won't figure it out. Just wait," Zhou Lang said, then picked up his glass, clinked it with General Qin's, and drank.
"Zhou Lang, I think you've all gone insane. You're all going to die a miserable death," Ye Qianqian glared at Zhou Lang, her eyes seemingly spitting fire.
"Ye Qianqian, I'll be waiting," Zhou Lang said nonchalantly.
…
General Qin had given orders long ago that once the food and drinks were served, no waiters were to enter the private room. When Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian brought people over, they had also told the person in charge of the Nanshan State Guesthouse that they were conducting an investigation in Private Room No. 1, so no one else had come in to disturb them.
A dozen minutes later, the door to the private room opened again.
A couple walked in; it was none other than Secretary Lei Gang and Leng Xinyue.
"Chief!"
As soon as Secretary Lei Gang and Leng Xinyue saw General Qin eating, they immediately stood still and executed a standard military salute.
"You've arrived."
General Qin did not rise; he only spoke the words in a cold tone.
"Secretary Lei… why are you here?"
When Secretary Lei Gang saluted General Qin, the eight police officers squatting in the corner didn't see it, but Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian saw it clearly.
That old man was actually Secretary Lei's chief? Wouldn't that make him a high-ranking official?
No matter how stupid or irreverent Nie Yuanxiong and Ye Qianqian were, they knew they had caused a huge disaster. Therefore, when Nie Yuanxiong spoke, his voice was trembling.
The eight police officers heard Nie Yuanxiong's words and turned around as well. Their eyes were filled with nothing but shock. They all understood in their hearts that they had provoked a major figure today, and they probably wouldn't be able to keep their jobs.
