Chapter 269
No need to say more—the one who had thrown Captain America aside was Peggy Carter. She was now only one insignificant step away from completing her transformation.
Aside from the pair of enormous black wings extending from her back, she still looked like a frail old woman. Yet the fact that she could break her shackles with her bare hands and casually toss Captain America aside was absolutely not strength a ninety-year-old grandmother should possess.
"Mmm… ah!" Peggy Carter appeared to be in immense pain, muffled groans of agony escaping her throat.
Suddenly, she covered her eyes with both hands. At last, with a piercing howl, she violently pulled them away, and dazzling green light shot from her eyes.
At the same time, her demonic black wings dissolved into specks of light. Green flames blazed fiercely over her body, leaving only simple clothing behind, while the demonic runes etched into her shone brilliantly.
This astonishing sight made Captain America, who had been thrown aside, freeze in place.
Peggy Carter’s transformation had only just begun. Her aged white hair rapidly changed from root to tip back to the brown of her youth, while her loose, wrinkled skin regained its firmness and elasticity.
Watching a ninety-year-old grandmother become younger than herself in an instant, Melinda asked Evenson in disbelief, "What… what exactly did you do?!"
Evenson, meanwhile, looked at his creation with a face full of delight. Well, there was nothing in his gaze but pure gratification, and it had absolutely nothing to do with her lovely figure or those simple clothes. "Sometimes, so-called fate can be taken into your own hands."
"I… I saw…" Peggy Carter, restored to youth, said between heavy breaths.
"Ms. Carter!" Evenson suddenly spoke up, cutting her off.
"Hah…" At his voice, Carter swiftly turned her head like a beast. Her eyes, which had remained shut after firing that green light, suddenly opened. Yet there were no eyeballs within them, only green Fel flames burning fiercely. Only after seeing that Evenson was the one speaking did she lower her guard, though her trembling lips showed that she seemed to have something to say.
"You’d better… put on some clothes." Evenson took out a black cloak and said with concern.
"Hmm?" At first, Carter seemed not to understand why Evenson had interrupted her. But after hearing what he said, she looked down and immediately cried out, "Oh, my God." Her voice was as crisp as it had been in her youth. She quickly turned around, bracing one hand against the wall and the other on her waist, presenting the back view of a proper lady.
"You never said I’d end up like this after the ritual." Carter took the cloak Evenson offered and quickly draped it around herself, still grumbling nonstop. She was a rather old-fashioned United Kingdom woman. Though she had done some embarrassing things during missions, she had never even worn a bikini in everyday life.
"I didn’t expect it either…" Evenson said innocently from the side. "I didn’t expect things to turn out like this, or for so many people to come… watch."
"Hmph." Carter snorted, tugged at her cloak, and turned around. The first person she saw was Melinda sitting in a chair. "You look familiar… Melinda?"
"It’s me, Ms. Carter," Melinda replied weakly.
"Ah… you grew up… hmm, got old." Carter looked at the female agent she had personally recruited all those years ago.
"Uh, time spares no one… right?" If anyone else had said that, Melinda would definitely have flown into a rage and punched them. Even if she could not move now, she would have written it down in her little notebook. But faced with Peggy Carter, she truly did not know what to say. Carter was over sixty years older than her, yet now looked younger than she did. There was simply no arguing with that.
"How do you feel now, Ms. Carter?" Evenson asked Carter.
"I think…" Carter had originally wanted to say something, but after seeing Evenson’s meaningful look, she abruptly changed her words. "Pretty good." After clenching her fist hard, she said, "Better than when I was young!"
"Oh, right!" Carter suddenly asked, "When I first woke up, I was a little confused. I think I threw someone out. Is he all right?"
"He’s fine." Evenson thought, You nearly scared me to death. I thought you were going to burn him down to nothing but a skull, then disintegrate that too. "That person… is over there."
With a wicked grin, Evenson pointed at Captain America, who was still in a crashed state.
When Carter looked over, she discovered that the person was Captain America, the beloved man she had longed for over sixty years. Her expression changed several times—surprise, affection, and resentment all flashed across her face.
But in the end, her face hardened. She crossed her arms over her chest and said, "Oh, you’re back, Steve?!"
"Ah, I’m back…" Captain America was completely unable to make sense of what was going on, but upon seeing Peggy Carter restored to youth, he still spoke the words he had kept buried for sixty years.
However, when he saw those flame-like eyes and that all-too-familiar expression, he instinctively raised his shield before his chest. He still remembered how Carter had answered when he had first gotten that shield and flashily asked her what she thought.
You stood me up for sixty years, and I nearly died. Now you dare show up before me?! You’re simply asking for death! Feel the power of the War Pigeon Clan!
Sure enough, with a duang, Carter instinctively mastered eye beams. Fel lasers shot from her eyes and struck Captain America’s shield head-on, frightening him so badly that he shrank completely behind it.
"You… still owe me a dance." Carter walked up to the trembling Captain America, grabbed him by the collar, and lifted him up. "Do you remember?"
"I… I remember." Captain America, God’s righteous man, had never been this terrified in his life.
"How could you only come back after all this time?" But Carter could no longer hold herself together, and her voice had already taken on a sob. "I waited for you for sixty years…"
"I… I’m sor… mmph…" Captain America was heartbroken as well, but he did not know what to say. He could only apologize helplessly, but the moment he opened his mouth, it was sealed.
Carter kissed him passionately.
"Now, finish that dance with me." After the kiss, Carter suddenly said coldly. Then she grabbed Captain America and dragged him outside.
"Dancing with a Demon Hunter is a tough job…" Evenson muttered as he watched their backs. "I hope Carter hasn’t scored First Blood."
