Chapter 272: Asking for the token
"Occupying the moral high ground?" the Young Man asked. "Father, didn't you usually teach me that strength is the foundation and everything else is empty? Why are we going through so much trouble to occupy the moral high ground now?"
The Middle-aged Man nodded and looked at the Young Man with a smile, saying, "Strength is indeed the foundation. If our Qu Family possessed absolute, overwhelming strength, we wouldn't need these empty gestures at all.
However, our Qu Family and the Zhang Family are currently evenly matched. Even if our Qu Family's strength is slightly greater than the Zhang Family's, that advantage is limited.
Under these circumstances, external forces become very important!"
The Young Man thought for a moment and nodded. "Father, I understand."
"Good. Tomorrow, come with me to the City Lord's Manor!" the Middle-aged Man said.
At dawn the next day, the Qu Family Head brought his son to the City Lord's Manor.
"Qu Family Head, welcome!" The City Lord of Chenyang City, upon learning that the Qu Family Head had come to visit in person, hurried out to greet them.
The Qu Family Head nodded and strode into the City Lord's Manor with his son.
In the City Lord's Manor's Council Hall, the Qu Family Head sat in the seat of honor while the City Lord sat beside him.
"Qu Family Head, what wind blows you here today?"
The City Lord asked flatteringly.
The Qu Family Head gave a cold snort and said, "It's because the City Guard has been derelict in their duties; my Qu Family's property, the Ziyun Auction House, has been robbed!"
"The Ziyun Auction House was robbed?" The City Lord turned pale with fright. "Who has the audacity to rob the Qu Family's Auction House? They must have a death wish!"
The City Lord sneered inwardly. He naturally knew about the Ziyun Auction House being robbed last night.
He even wished the thieves had stolen more, ideally robbing both the Qu Family and the Zhang Family until they had no foothold left in Chenyang City.
Of course, he also knew this was just wishful thinking.
As long as the Qu Family had a Martial Ancestor overseeing them, the Family's status was as stable as Mount Tai.
"The Ziyun Auction House was robbed last night, and I didn't sleep a wink, wondering which thief was so bold as to commit a crime in Chenyang City.
I don't care about my Auction House as much as I worry about the safety of Chenyang City. If these thieves dare to rob my Ziyun Auction House today, they'll dare to rob the City Lord's Manor tomorrow.
That is why I've come to inform the City Lord today, so you can take precautions early."
The Qu Family Head cleared his throat and spoke loudly.
"These thieves are indeed detestable. Family Head, do you have any clues?" the City Lord asked.
"That group of thieves was clad in night-traveling clothes; they acted swiftly and cleanly, leaving no clues behind.
However, I am certain those thieves are still in Chenyang City and intend to continue their crimes," the Qu Family Head said.
"What? These thieves are so bold they dare to strike again?" The City Lord slammed the table, stood up, and said angrily, "We must bring these thieves to justice and restore peace and order to Chenyang City."
The City Lord finally understood; the Qu Family Head wanted his cooperation to catch the thieves.
The Qu Family Head stood up, cupped his hands, and said, "The City Lord is truly righteous. My purpose in coming here is to borrow the City Guard to conduct a massive search of Chenyang City. We must not let those thieves escape!"
"I trust the Qu Family Head's handling of matters. This is the City Guard Mobilization Order!" The City Lord took out a token and handed it over.
The City Lord knew that even if he didn't want to give him the token, he had to, as the Qu Family Head was a master of the Martial Ancestor Realm.
After putting away the token, the Qu Family Head strode toward the City Guard barracks.
After all that talk, wasn't it all for this token?
Now that he had the token, he naturally had to get things done quickly.
As for the City Lord standing there, he was no longer needed, so why bother with pleasantries?
