Chapter 276
After the bald Indian traitor Sitwell reported Loki’s exact location, the task force immediately set out aboard a Quinjet.
Fortunately, the aircraft could fly at supersonic speeds. Otherwise, flying from the United States to Germany would have taken over ten hours. Just imagine Loki standing alone on the street in his flashy armor from night until dawn.
"To be honest, this is the most expensive form of transportation I’ve ever ridden, but it’s less comfortable than a hard seat on an old green train." Fighter jets naturally did not prioritize passenger comfort. Evenson started complaining not long after they took off.
"That’s because you’ve never flown in an old transport plane." Captain America, seated across from him, said, "Now that was truly awful."
They said there was a generation gap every thirty years. This guy had slept for over sixty years, after all. Sometimes Captain America would suddenly say something that no one could respond to. He was practically the ultimate conversation killer. Like now, when Evenson could only answer, "Heh heh…"
"Um…" Bored, Evenson looked to the other side, where Sif, the cute, greatsword-wielding tomboy, sat in a full suit of armor.
He found it perfectly normal that she had joined them. Loki’s knack for courting disaster was exceptional. Even after being out of the fight for so long, the hatred Loki had built up remained rock solid.
He had framed her lord and secret crush, sent the treacherous Destroyer after her, and most importantly, she blamed Loki for her being stranded on Earth.
So when she heard that Loki had come to Earth to cause trouble, this Valkyrie from Asgard had nearly gone berserk. It felt like a ball of fire was burning in her chest. Of course, that might also have been because she had just downed a whole bucket of vodka.
Nick Fury naturally had no objection. Sif knew Loki better than anyone present, and she was also a powerful fighter. If it really came to a fight, Captain America… well, heh heh.
At the moment, the Valkyrie was staring blankly at a rather advanced tablet. Evenson immediately asked helpfully, "Need help? You look like you don’t know how to use it."
"No…" Sif refused. "I just need to remember how it works. This is technology that Asgard and several other realms discarded a long time ago."
A sixty-year generation gap was enough to kill a conversation. One could only imagine how awkward it might get when communicating with someone from an entirely different civilization who was over a thousand years old.
Maybe I should get my hands on some alien technology too.
"How have you been lately?" Evenson helplessly changed the subject. After all, Sif’s favor was still worth earning.
"Bored…" Sif seemed to have finally remembered how to use the outdated device. Her fingers tapped across the tablet. "The people here have been very hospitable, but they never agree to drink with me."
Sif continued complaining. "And all this leisurely stuff has made me feel like my body is rusting. Whenever I want to find someone to spar with, no one agrees." She turned to Evenson. "They really are cowards."
Evenson pursed his lips and muttered inwardly, Agreeing to drink or spar with you isn’t bravery. It’s a death wish. Anyone who agrees to drink with you first and spar afterward probably has something going on at home and doesn’t want to live anymore.
"Guys, you can stop chatting now." Natasha, who was serving as the pilot, turned around and said, "We’re almost there." Then, somewhat awkwardly, she added, "Miss Sarah, could you return to your seat? We’re about to decelerate, and you might get hurt like that."
Before boarding, Sarah had stubbornly insisted on coming along, claiming she wanted to stand shoulder to shoulder with her boss in battle. Yet after getting on the plane, she had spent the whole time leaning over Natasha’s pilot seat, making lovestruck eyes at her.
"You’re worried about me? I’m touched." Sarah smiled and happily returned to her seat.
Evenson really wanted to curse her out. You’re a disgrace to the succubus race. But after thinking about himself, he did not have the nerve to say it.
"Good." Carter, who had remained silent throughout the flight, suddenly spoke. "This is the perfect chance to test my strength."
"No way." Perhaps in her haste, Sif forgot that she was strapped in by a seatbelt. Yet she still rose to her feet without any obstruction. "I will personally punish this traitor of Asgard." She glared at Carter with a rather intimidating look.
"Don’t forget, this is Earth, ma’am." Peggy Carter, competitive by nature, did not yield in the slightest. She took off her sunglasses and locked eyes with Sif, her own eyes burning with a hazy glow. "What happens on Earth is decided by Earthlings."
"That does not change the fact that Loki is a criminal of Asgard," Sif said.
"Then we’ll capture him and extradite him to you."
Evenson had no interest whatsoever in such a meaningless contest. He calmly sat between them, watching the two women—each prettier than the other, each more manly than the other—argue.
At that point, both women seemed to realize that verbal arguments were powerless, so they began competing in sheer presence instead.
Caught between them, Evenson suddenly felt a cold gust sweep past him. He turned his head. "Stop arguing, you two. The Captain already jumped out." If they wanted to fight, they should have just done it. Why waste time talking and let someone else get ahead?
"He’s always like this." When a man showed off, a woman had to play along. Since her man had already jumped out, Carter had no choice but to give up.
"Why do I always run into people like this after coming to Earth?" Sif grumbled angrily. But it was immoral to interfere in someone else’s battle without permission, so she could only stop as well.
By then, Loki had forced a large group of people to kneel before him and was delivering an impromptu speech, demanding that they accept him as their new lord.
But an old man, at least eighty years old, did not buy any of it. He stood right up. Your little act gets zero points from me, kid! You think a few lousy lines are enough to make us submit? Bah!
I’ve seen plenty in my day. Back then, our Führer’s speeches were majestic and stirring, capable of swallowing mountains and rivers! What the hell are you supposed to be?
Fortunately, Captain America descended from the sky and saved the life of that old man, who might have been a former **. He evacuated the crowd and began fighting Loki.
But Loki’s response was clear: my power far surpasses that of your previous enemies! Before long, he was pressing Captain America hard. Sif on the plane felt that her turn would come very soon.
"Miss me, Agent Romanoff?" Energetic music suddenly blared through the aircraft, followed by a teasing voice. Iron Man, Tony Stark, streaked in from the horizon trailing a line of yellow light.
"No!" Sarah snatched the microphone and replied with an icy expression.
Tony did not care about that remark. He had plenty of women—no, it was because all he could think about right now was his grand entrance. But just as he was about to reach his optimal attack range, he suddenly seemed to faint. Spinning through the air without slowing down at all, he slammed headfirst into Loki.
Loki, who had never expected such a move, was struck head-on and embedded into the steps of the plaza.
"Mm…" Everyone in the plane stared at Evenson, whose hands were pressed together. He tilted his head and said, "I told you his anti-Sorcerer device was complete nonsense. See? My Weakness Curse is still pretty effective."
I feel like I’m almost at the Ascension stage.
