Chapter 295
New York was in complete chaos, but the Avengers were not the only ones resisting the alien invasion. The New York police had joined the fight as well.
Though they had initially dismissed the callers reporting it as lunatics, once Chitauri began swarming all over the city and patrol officers flooded in with reports, their brains froze for two seconds before they finally realized that this was fucking real.
Since it was real, they had to fight. Protecting the lives and property of the people was, after all, a police officer’s duty. It was just that this time, they were not facing gang thugs, but an alien invasion force. With nothing but standard-issue light weapons, the New York police were having an extremely difficult fight.
"Chief, the National Guard won’t arrive for another hour." A soot-covered officer ran over with his head lowered and reported to the police chief.
The chief, around forty years old, nearly coughed up blood when he heard that. An hour? At that point, they might as well send a National Guard corpse-collection team! "Does the military know what’s happening here?"
The officer wore a helpless expression. "How would I know?"
Just as they were talking, another large wave of Chitauri attacked. Ratatatat… A burst of muffled gunfire came from behind them. That was clearly not the sound of police weapons.
The chief and the other officers turned around to see a short, elderly man in his fifties charging toward them. He wore military camouflage, was wrapped in ammunition belts, and carried an M249 squad automatic weapon.
He kept spraying the aliens in the air with his light machine gun, shouting, "You damned alien scum! You will repay your invasion of the United States with blood! I’ll protect my homeland at any cost!"
Perhaps empowered by sheer idealism, the little old man was somehow hitting every shot. As his light machine gun roared, Chitauri kept dropping from the sky. The crisis in the area was quickly brought under control for the moment.
But if anyone had calmly analyzed the situation, they would have realized that those aliens had not been shot down by him. Judging by the trajectories, the real shooters should have been hidden atop the buildings on either side. The little old man was merely putting on a show.
The little old man slung his gun across his shoulder, puffed out his chest, and walked up to the chief. "There are still civilians trapped inside the buildings. If they come out onto the streets, they’ll walk straight into the line of fire. Get your men inside immediately and evacuate them through the subway."
Then he waved his hand and shouted, "And establish defensive positions from here to 39th Street immediately, understand?!"
His ears ringing from the shouting, the chief wiped the spit off his face. "Why should I listen to you?" I’m a leader myself. If you tell me to do something and I just do it, wouldn’t that be humiliating?
To his surprise, the little old man gave him no face at all. He grabbed the chief by the collar and shouted into his face, spittle flying everywhere, "I’m General Ross of the United States. Do you want to compare who knows more about fighting?" After saying that, he fired several dozen more shots into the air, and the aliens continued to tumble down.
The chief wiped his face again. Damn it, his face had been covered in soot during the battle, but now it was completely clean. Still, his hands did not slow down. He immediately pulled out his radio and issued orders according to the little old man’s instructions.
What else could he do? That record clearly marked the man as a god-tier player, while he was just a useless scrub who only knew how to shout 666. Other than obeying, did he have any other choice?
With a clang, a man in a uniform in United States-themed colors and carrying a shield landed on top of a police car. The chief, who had just finished giving orders, jumped in fright. He turned around and asked in confusion, "What do you need?"
The newcomer was Captain America. He looked at what the police were doing and said, "…Nothing."
After violently beating back the attacking Chitauri, he ran off to climb the stairs. Why was it that whenever I tried to make an appearance lately, it always turned out so awkward?
At that moment, on one floor of a building nearby, a woman dressed in a form-fitting nun’s habit and holding a sniper rifle activated her communicator. "Mistress, this is Veronica. The goods have been delivered. Requesting further instructions."
After a while, a response came through the communicator. "Well done. Now escort the actors off the stage safely, then initiate the recovery measures. Drag those fellows’ corpses back to The Hive."
Veronica said, "Yes, Mistress."
"Tch, the quality of these souls is truly awful." On the rooftop of another skyscraper, Fel Maiden Usaless spat disdainfully. Ever since she had manifested, this area had become a forbidden zone for life. Any Chitauri that came close would have their souls silently harvested, falling from the sky like kites with their strings cut. Yet judging from Usaless’s attitude, she was clearly dissatisfied with the quality of these souls.
"When I heard from you that there was a war here, I thought there would be plenty of souls to harvest, and I was quite happy about it." As Usaless spoke, she walked toward the scythe. "But I never expected the quality to be this poor. They have no value worth appreciating at all. I have urgent business, so I’ll be heading back first."
Urgent business? What urgent business could you possibly have? You’re in a hurry to go back and finish that game of Hearthstone, aren’t you? Is that even fun? You go back, turn into a bald Great Demon King of Terror, hold a Mill Priest in one hand and Stinking Swarm in the other—who would dare beat you?
Usaless walked up beside the scythe and struck a diving pose, about to plunge straight in. But her movement suddenly stopped. She suddenly remembered that there was still a necessary procedure she had not gone through. Although she herself felt there was no chance whatsoever that he would agree, she might as well ask first.
"You should know where I come from, so are you willing to…" Usaless turned and asked Evenson.
But before she could finish, Evenson interrupted, "Impossible."
Usaless frowned, and her aura surged. "What did you say?"
The runes on Evenson’s arm suddenly lit up. Facing Usaless, he said, "If you want me to help you destroy Sargeras, you should wait until I’m completely intoxicated by your power and have lost even the most basic judgment before saying something like that."
"But I’m not muddleheaded yet." Evenson suddenly smiled. "In fact, you should understand it yourself. Even if you harvested countless more souls and strengthened yourself to the limit, you still couldn’t destroy the fallen titan."
"You are really making me unhappy, little Sorcerer." Usaless’s expression darkened. She knew the limits of her own power, but no one had ever dared say it so directly.
"But…" Before she could get angry, Evenson continued, "I can make you a promise."
"What promise?" Usaless asked.
"Sargeras’s soul will be sealed." Evenson narrowed his eyes. "He will lose his freedom forever. Wouldn’t that make him suffer even more than destroying him completely? And in the place where he is sealed, he’ll be the only soul there. He won’t even have Hearthstone to play."
Usaless’s green eyes gleamed brightly. She was clearly greatly tempted. "Can you guarantee it?"
"I guarantee it," Evenson said. "Sargeras will definitely be sealed away."
"Very well. You had better not fail." Usaless narrowed her eyes. "Because if you fail, I will merely change masters. And you know who your soul will belong to, and what kind of torment it will suffer."
Then she smiled brightly. "In that case, I’ll lend you my power first." She glanced once more at the runes on Evenson’s arm. "With those runes, you should barely be able to wield this power."
I recommend two books: "Astrological Affairs Manager." It’s by a veteran author, and it’s quite well written.
There’s also "Taoist of the Infinite World," written by my classmate. I helped him come up with some of the ideas.
Please give them your support.
