Chapter 50: The Witch Sleeping Peacefully

Xu Xi had spent four years with the witch. During these four years, he had watched the witch grow up. When it came to everything about the witch, everything about Klisa, Xu Xi felt that no one could be more familiar with her than he was.

But even with such familiarity, Xu Xi had rarely observed Klisa's eyes carefully. What words should he use to describe them?

The campfire burned in the darkness, warmth and glimmer intertwining. The weather was turning cold, breath forming mist, and her bright, fragile eyes blinked slightly.

That pair of eyes was not as beautiful as the descriptions of protagonists in novels and biographies. There was no mysterious or dazzling color. There was no firm and decisive fearlessness. There was no beauty of innocence and kindness. Those things, those descriptions, had nothing to do with the emotionless witch.

All Xu Xi could see were empty, lifeless eyes, devoid of any Life Qi, containing no emotions, like a dead object with no sense of presence. Only in the moment she blinked could he feel that the owner of those eyes was alive.

"…"

Her eyelashes fluttered gently, and the moisture covering the surface of her eyeballs, illuminated by the campfire, further magnified that sense of calm and indifference.

Xu Xi was curious; it was said that the eyes were the windows to the soul, so what would Klisa's soul be like? He stared, looked closely, and observed carefully. But no matter how he observed, all Xu Xi ever saw in those eyes was his own reflection, nothing else.

This was normal. After all, Xu Xi was looking at Klisa, so naturally, Klisa's field of vision only contained Xu Xi.

"It seems that saying is false." Xu Xi felt a little regretful. He had failed to see through the witch's heart through her eyes.

Without wasting more time, Xu Xi began to carefully observe the gold and black intertwined within Klisa's eyes. The two colors intertwined and lingered, like stars reflecting each other in the night sky, merging into one in a way Xu Xi could not understand, inseparable. It wasn't beautiful; one could even say it was frightening. The twisted colors made one feel psychologically uncomfortable.

"Klisa, can you describe to me when your eyes changed?" Xu Xi asked. "It was before you returned," the girl replied in a calm tone.

Regarding the mutation of her eyes, the witch herself did not know either. But through her explanation and various follow-up questions, Xu Xi quickly understood the root cause of the eye mutation.

"Despair and sadness, huh…" "No, more specifically, it was overly intense and stimulating emotions." "The reason Klisa's eyes appeared pale gold is because half of her body contains Demon Race Bloodline. Then, thinking from another perspective, does the change in her eyes correspond to a change in her Bloodline?"

Looking at the girl who was as still and quiet as a doll, Xu Xi fell into deep thought. He had imagined many possibilities, but among those countless possibilities, only the Demon Race Bloodline was the most suspicious.

Thus, Xu Xi reached out his palm, gently covering Klisa's head, stroking the position where her two horns had previously been removed. It was a bit rough. It was a bit raised. There was a slight sign of regrowth.

"Just as I thought…" Xu Xi's guess was confirmed.

The sound of wind billowed in his ears. As the night went on, the evening wind was becoming more fierce, but it was all blocked by the magic barrier. Only the sound remained, echoing unwillingly.

Xu Xi did not know much about the Demon Race. He had only seen a few scattered words in the books of the Mages Association, such as that the Demon Race were born unable to use magic but possessed powerful Physical Bodies, and were pests of the world detested by the gods. These records were too subjective and lacked more detailed content. Therefore, Xu Xi could not judge whether Klisa's changes were good or bad.

"Klisa, do you feel like anything is different?" Xu Xi dispelled his illumination spell and asked the owner of the eyes. She shook her head. Her gray-silver hair swayed along with her movement. "Mentor, I don't have that feeling," Klisa answered truthfully. She didn't feel physically uncomfortable, nor did she feel like anything had gotten better; except for the change in her pupils, everything remained the same as usual.

"Is that so…" The campfire flared up hot, and Xu Xi gave up on investigating her eyes. His understanding of the Demon Race was too little, almost a blank slate. In a situation where intelligence was so scarce, the Observer and Mortals Wisdom could not provide much help. If he wanted to discern the truth behind it, he could only go to other cities, consult more books on the Demon Race, and observe the girl's daily changes.

Fortunately, this change did not bring Klisa any pain. The only problem was that her eyes looked creepy. Xu Xi didn't mind, and Klisa didn't care, so there was nothing to worry about regarding this issue.

The time that followed, Xu Xi and Klisa sat around the campfire. Protected by the barrier with the warmth of fire, no strong wind could blow in, nor could it extinguish the temporarily erected campfire. It was a very subtle feeling. Sitting quietly inside, sipping hot water, watching the raging winds of nature roar not far away, it felt as if they were isolated from the world, transcending the boundary between life and death.

Looking up, one could see the stars filling the sky. Looking down, one could see the vast wilderness. Looking to the side, one could see the burning Alenson.

"Mentor… Mentor… Mentor." In such an environment, Klisa was still the same as usual, wanting to do something for Xu Xi from time to time. For example, boiling hot water, or organizing the items inside the spatial ring. She couldn't stay idle. She always wanted to help Xu Xi with something. In the end, it was Xu Xi who spoke up, telling the girl to sit down and rest, and only then did she sit down quietly.

"Klisa, we are not in Alenson now, you can relax a bit." "…Yes."

Seeing the girl who still couldn't sit still, Xu Xi decided to tell some stories to help distract her. He told many things, and they were quite varied. There were myths from Earth, tips and techniques for practicing magic, or perhaps just the leisurely daily life of ordinary people. Klisa listened very attentively. Was it because the stories were truly interesting, or because the person telling them was Xu Xi? Or perhaps… neither?

Halfway through his story, Xu Xi realized that at some point, the girl had fallen into a deep sleep. Her breathing was steady, she slept sweetly, emitting a slight purring sound. Her delicate features, under the moonlight, had a unique cold and beautiful quality.

"She is just a child after all." Xu Xi smiled helplessly. He stood up, walked over to the sleeping girl, and covered her with a thick, warm blanket. It seemed she perceived Xu Xi's movements in her dream. The girl let out an incoherent murmur, appearing very cute.

To be honest, when he first met Klisa, Xu Xi had never imagined that the skinny girl covered in mud would grow into what she was today.

"Is this a beautiful life simulator, or a little girl raising simulator?" Under the starry sky, Xu Xi summoned the simulator panel and fell into deep thought.
