Chapter 65: Shocking Change

Hank ultimately failed to commit suicide.

It wasn't just because the gun was out of bullets; more importantly, he discovered that the wound on his arm had actually started to heal!

Although the speed was extremely slow, the itching sensation from the wound and the fact that it had already scabbed over in a short period of time made Hank certain that some unknown changes had occurred in his body.

He didn't know whether these changes were good or bad.

But one thing was certain: he might, just might, not turn into a zombie!

Even if it was just a possibility, it was worth Hank gambling his life to find out what was truly happening to him.

And what he needed to do now was—eat!

The recent exertion had made his stomach, which had just barely been filled with food, hungry again.

How many survivors are left in the world?

No one can probably say for sure.

However, one thing is certain: those who gathered together to form survivor bases to stay alive have always been under the surveillance of the Umbrella Corporation.

And they are precisely the primary targets of the Umbrella Corporation.

Compared to small bases consisting of only three to five people, organizations of dozens or even hundreds are easier to target!

Just a small bit of guidance can trigger a zombie horde, submerging everything!

The town where Hank often scavenged for supplies.

The hordes of corpses that had originally been aimlessly wandering the streets began to move.

If someone were here, they would see a tall Creature in this horde, its head covered by a sack, with several thick, long nails hammered into it, and holding a giant axe in its hand.

And this Creature deliberately created noise along the way, guiding the direction of the horde's movement, leading the horde towards the survivor base.

These Creatures are bio-weapons created by the Umbrella Corporation to carry out various missions.

And they are precisely the best tools for breaching the gates of those bases.

Under its giant axe, even the most solid iron gate would deform.

To deal with these Creatures, unless high-power weapons like heavy machine guns or rocket launchers are used, it's very difficult to kill them!

And in the survivor bases around the world today, bases with such firepower are few and far between.

And such bases, of course, receive special attention from the Umbrella Corporation.

When those bases are targeted, it won't just be this one type of bio-weapon deployed.

"Look, what's that?"

Soon, the base's lookout noticed the horde slowly approaching in the distance like a tide.

In the horde, even the two-meter-tall Axe Man with the giant axe became inconspicuous.

Even if it was just a small town's horde, when it gathered and surged in one direction, its oppressive presence still struck fear into people's hearts.

Upon discovering the horde, the entire base fell into a panic.

Most people wanted to flee.

And facing a horde, fleeing was indeed the most correct choice.

But the question was, where would they flee?

And where could they go?

Even more so, could they escape?

This place was already far from the town; if they fled further, they could only go into the mountains.

But in that case, facing tireless zombies, they would quickly be caught.

And how would they survive deep in the mountains?

They didn't have much time to hesitate.

After the horde was discovered approaching.

Some people who had guns and vehicles immediately fled with vehicles full of supplies.

As for where they were fleeing, they weren't sure either.

In less than half an hour, everyone with combat capability in the base had left, leaving only those who were abandoned or didn't want to leave.

Not to mention relying on just a few people; even if everyone in the base joined together, they couldn't stop the horde's advance.

Therefore, when the horde approached, after an initial burst of gunfire, the entire base was occupied by the horde; the whole process didn't even take more than ten minutes!

— Hank, who was hunting, suddenly turned his head.

Just now, he had caught a strong scent of blood.

This bloody smell was not like the blood of humans or beasts after death; it was more like the rotten smell of a large number of Creatures that had been dead for a long time.

He was very familiar with this smell, or rather, in this apocalypse, no one was unfamiliar with it.

It was the smell of zombies!

But the question was, why would such a large number of zombies appear here?

Such a strong smell could not possibly exist without at least a thousand zombies.

Wait!

Hank suddenly had a guess.

Could it be that a zombie horde had erupted?

Having been in the apocalypse for so many years, Hank naturally knew that once zombies discovered living people, they would rush towards them, then follow behind them, and would not change their direction even if they left their sight.

Therefore, when they returned to the base, they would check if there were any tails following them.

Could it be that someone was accidentally tracked by zombies, which then agitated the entire horde?

Hank suddenly realized that the base might have fallen!

With the base's defenses, even if only a hundred zombies attacked, it could still be lost, let alone a whole town's worth of zombies!

No, he had to go and see!

But Hank, after taking two steps, hesitated.

In his current state, was it really appropriate to go back?

Not long after the wound became infected, Hank's body underwent a mutation.

First, the areas that came into contact with the wound, his arms and calves, underwent a horrifying transformation.

His arms and legs actually grew a layer of dense scales!

These scales were generally dark black, very fine, and their defensive power seemed quite good!

As time passed, the scales began to spread outwards from the vicinity of the wound.

By now, his left arm and both calves were covered in scales, and even his left hand and both feet were covered, turning into sharp claws and toes like a fierce beast.

His greatly changed feet even burst his shoes.

If he hadn't retained his sanity until now, being very certain that "I am me" and not being affected by anything, Hank would have committed suicide long ago.

Having become like this, if he encountered humans, they would probably immediately draw their guns and shoot.

This was also the reason he hesitated about whether to go back and see.

And, to be honest, he didn't have much affection for that base.

The reason he stayed there was simply because staying there allowed him to have a life, a place to survive in this apocalypse.

"Forget it, I'll go and see."

The base encountering a horde was merely a guess after his increasingly keen sense of smell detected the foul stench; he hadn't seen it with his own eyes.

Regardless, Hank decided to take a look from a distance, at least to confirm whether his guess was correct.
