Chapter 971: Husband, Don’t Misunderstand
Shortly after.
The Holy Empress's Immortal Cave.
Inside a magnificently decorated guest hall.
Seeing that he had been left hanging for several hours, with not even a maid in the room, Bai He had lost the excitement he arrived with, and an irrepressible unease grew in his heart.
By now, the cup of top-grade Immortal tea beside his chair had long since gone cold. He felt increasingly like he was sitting on pins and needles; he wanted to take his leave but didn't have the courage, so he could only sit there awkwardly and tremblingly, not knowing what to do.
Just as Bai He was about to lose his patience, a tinkling sound of ornaments came from outside the door, jolting his spirits.
Soon, a pretty maid adorned with pearls and jade, wearing a flowing smoky dress, walked in. She carried an exquisite jade pot, clearly there to refill the tea for the guest.
Seeing the maid enter, Bai He felt as if he had caught a lifeline. He hurriedly stood up and said:
"Miss, if the Holy Empress is still busy, it would be inconvenient for me to continue disturbing her. I should take my leave for now and come back another day to pay my respects."
As he spoke, he tactfully pulled out several shimmering Immortal Crystals from his robe, attempting to slip them to her as a tip.
Although the maid before him was only a Loose Immortal, with a status far below that of a True Immortal, he didn't dare to be the least bit negligent. He was as polite as if he were facing a superior.
As the saying goes, "the gatekeeper of a prime minister is a seventh-grade official." The servants in the Holy Empress's residence were still beings he couldn't afford to offend; a few disparaging words to the Holy Empress would be enough to make things very difficult for him.
Unexpectedly, the maid was completely unmoved and didn't reach out to take his gift. She simply said coolly:
"In such matters, this servant wouldn't dare to act on her own authority."
"You are a guest invited by the Empress. Even if you wish to leave, you must let her know. There is no reason to depart without saying goodbye."
Hearing this, Bai He's expression stiffened. He could only force a dry smile and agree, quickly asking:
"My apologies, I was being impetuous. I wonder if the Empress is free now? Could I go and pay my respects?"
Simply waiting like this wasn't an option. Rather than waiting indefinitely, it was better to take the initiative and show his face before the Holy Empress.
If the Holy Empress was truly too busy, he could then leave logically without wasting more time.
On the other hand, if the Holy Empress was willing to see him, he could take the opportunity to express his loyalty. If he could use this to cling to the Immortal Lord, it would be even better…
Thinking of this, Bai He became even more determined to see the Holy Empress immediately, and his expression grew increasingly urgent.
On the other side, facing Bai He's request, the maid subconsciously frowned. After a slight hesitation, she nodded and said:
"Alright then. I heard just now that the Empress is receiving an old acquaintance who just ascended from the Lower Realm. They should be finishing up soon. Follow me."
With that, she unceremoniously tucked the Immortal Crystals Bai He had offered into her sleeve and turned to walk out.
"Wonderful. Thank you for leading the way, Miss."
Hearing this, Bai He was overjoyed. After thanking her repeatedly, he followed obediently behind the maid.
In this manner, he followed the maid through the twists and turns of the Immortal Cave, passing through numerous gardens until they reached a secluded and quiet flower hall.
This place was located in the deepest part of the Immortal Cave, and even the surrounding Formations and Restrictions were much stricter than elsewhere.
After leading Bai He here, the maid smiled slightly and whispered:
"The Empress is inside. You may go right in, High Immortal."
Then, she made a gesture of invitation to Bai He and silently turned to leave, soon vanishing from sight.
Seeing the slightly ajar door not far away, Bai He was momentarily stunned, feeling somewhat at a loss.
After a brief moment of nervousness, he composed himself, carefully straightened his robes and crown, and then gently pushed open the door.
Upon entering, he saw layers of curtains blocking his view, making it impossible to see clearly inside.
Bai He opened his mouth slightly, but before he could call out, a familiar male voice came from behind the curtains, instantly cutting him off.
"Madam, isn't what we're doing too risky? If the Immortal Lord sees us, it will be trouble."
Qi Da?!
Hearing this voice, Bai He was startled, and a trace of suspicion unconsciously appeared on his face.
It seemed this kid wasn't just an ordinary believer; he appeared to be very familiar with the Holy Empress…
The next moment, a soft and charming female voice came from within:
"You silly man, you used to always call me Shan'er. Now that you've ascended, you call me the Immortal Lord's wife. Are you trying to be distant on purpose?"
This isn't right!
This… how is this possible?!
After identifying who the female voice belonged to, Bai He was instantly dumbstruck, his mind going blank.
Holy shit!!!
I seem to have… heard something I wasn't supposed to hear!
Could it be… I heard wrong?
Yes, I must have heard wrong!
Just as Bai He was trying to numb himself with delusions, rustling sounds began to come from the other side of the bead curtain, as if the man and woman had already embraced.
What the hell!
Bai He's eyes widened, and his whole body froze. It took a while before he barely managed to snap out of it, his back already drenched in cold sweat.
That's right!
Qi Da was actually the Holy Empress's old lover!
And he had accidentally stumbled into the tryst of this man and woman…
Realizing this, Bai He's face was full of existential doubt. He wished he could sew his ears shut and find a hole in the ground to crawl into.
If he were discovered, he would surely be silenced on the spot!
No!
Even escaping would be useless; the maid from earlier knew he had been here!
Thinking of this, Bai He's face turned pale, feeling as though he were sprinting down a path of certain death.
Just as his hair stood on end, the main door was suddenly kicked open, and a tall, thin, eerie figure rushed in from outside.
This figure wore a uniquely shaped Bronze mask and a Black ceremonial robe with gold thread. His aura was obscure and mysterious, making him look like an ordinary person without any cultivation, yet he gave Bai He, a True Immortal, an indescribable sense of pressure.
The moment he saw this figure, Bai He's legs went weak, and he fell to his knees with a thud.
"Immortal… Immortal Lord!"
At this moment, he was terrified beyond measure, trembling all over, unable to even utter a complete sentence.
However, the figure suspected to be Immortal Lord Tai Hao didn't even glance at him, walking straight past him and behind the curtains.
Soon, a series of classic dialogue lines came from inside:
"Who is he?"
"Husband, don't misunderstand. He is an old acquaintance of mine from the Lower Realm. Having just ascended, he is currently catching up with me. Is there a problem?"
"Catching up? Look at your disheveled clothes. Is this how you catch up…"
Throughout the entire process, Bai He didn't even have the courage to lift his head, slumped on the ground shivering, not daring to move an inch.
