Donnie had always treated Jean and the Black Phoenix differently. They were not the same thing at all. Jean was still Dr. Jean, but the Black Phoenix had long been filled by a secondary personality, becoming a pitiful creature controlled by the Phoenix Force. Unlike Professor X, Donnie would not painstakingly consider how to help Jean "come out," truly accept her secondary personality, merge the two, and successfully control the Phoenix Force.
