Elevator
Bai Cangshu sensed the abnormal atmosphere around him. This was the first time he had entered a mission world only to find himself in danger from the very start.
In previous mission worlds, even in the Jujutsu World, where the environment had been the most dangerous, the Space had placed Reincarnators in relatively safe locations within the City of Silence.
It was only because Fifth Element had begun hunting other Reincarnators that so many of them had died shortly after the start.
The One Piece World had been the same. The Reincarnators had been placed on a beach and had not drawn Enel’s attention. Instead, infighting had broken out among them, alerting Enel and leading to their total annihilation.
The Space had consciously avoided having Reincarnators die accidentally the moment they were sent into a mission world.
Yet in this special world named Secondary World B711, Bai Cangshu had been thrown into such a suffocating, dark environment the instant he arrived.
The bizarre corpses and countless long snakes were enough to pose a severe threat to some lower-level Reincarnators.
And this was not an isolated case.
Faint crackling currents flickered around Bai Cangshu’s body as countless tiny sounds filled his ears.
"It really went all out."
Bai Cangshu took two steps through the water and pulled up a corpse. Golden Dodon Ray energy gathered at his fingertips, used like a source of light.
The corpse showed no signs of decay, nor did it bear any wounds. It wore a striped white hospital gown. It was a woman, and judging by the feel of her neck beneath his grip, she was probably quite young.
Bai Cangshu lowered his head and met the corpse’s lifeless eyes, which stared straight at him.
You have been afflicted by Curse: Resentment of the Deceased.A check is being performed. You have resisted this curse. Before the chill could rise across Bai Cangshu’s skin, before his muscles could fully begin to stiffen, an even more overwhelming, icy deathly aura surged from his bloodline and devoured every trace of negative energy in his body.
Bai Cangshu’s Myriad Tribulations Yin Spirit Yellow Springs Physique possessed special resistance against spirits. Ordinary curses and yin ghosts could not affect him at all.
Spirit Control (Rare): Passive trait. You gain additional resistance against spirits. Soul-type abilities are greatly weakened against you. You are immune to spiritual arts and Reishi-type ability attacks below C-rank. This ability has priority. (Note: When abilities with conflicting effects clash, abilities with priority take effect first.)Buzz!
The golden energy had been charged for too long and was becoming increasingly unstable.
Bai Cangshu casually pointed toward a spot overhead, following the sounds he had "heard."
The Dodon Ray shot out in an instant.
The dazzling golden light tore through the darkness of the sewer like a sharp sword. The several-meter-thick stone floor was pierced as though by a laser.
Countless long snakes in the darkness instantly lunged at Bai Cangshu and began biting him.
Whoosh!
Radiant Flame immediately ignited. The snakes thrashed as they fell into the water, carrying the flames with them and making the sewer somewhat brighter.
You attacked a Reincarnator. Based on the difference in Mental Power between both parties, you have obtained the following information:Your Divine Finger Technique Lv. 4 dealt piercing damage to Reincarnator NC55514933.NC55514933 has entered a near-death state."Damn, it didn’t die outright?"
Bai Cangshu raised his hand and struck the stone slab above him.
Tap.
A powerful force entered the slab, followed by high-frequency vibrations.
Bzz—boom!
As the stone slab exploded, Bai Cangshu had already drifted gracefully onto the ground.
"Quick, save her!"
A sturdily built man in a red jacket with long gray hair gave the order in a low voice. He held two Short-Barreled Submachine Guns in both hands, their bodies engraved with runes that now glowed brightly.
The man’s codename was Loka, and he was the captain of this temporary team, 37411. His expression was grave. Though he had heard the rumors, being placed in such a non-Derivative World still placed immense pressure on him.
He had hastily formed a team of seven. After entering the mission world, they discovered they were in an abandoned hospital. When they tried to leave, they found that some bizarre force existed within the hospital.
They simply could not find an exit.
Even the windows and walls they saw were not real. Breaking through one would only bring them back to where they had started.
He immediately realized that they had likely entered some kind of supernatural scenario. Combined with the many supernatural-related milestones that had appeared after the world loaded, he could basically confirm that this world contained countless ghostly and spectral elements.
Loka had replaced both his weapons and ammunition with enchantments specialized for spirit bodies. Only then had they managed to repel the suddenly appearing Grudge Spirit.
But before they could relax, a laser shot up from somewhere below and instantly pierced through the abdomen and chest of the team’s caster, Lilith.
"Loka, I think we need to leave…"
At that moment, Short Hair, the team’s Mental Power sensor, spoke with a pale face.
"If we could leave, wouldn’t we have run already?!"
The others snapped irritably, but the short-haired one continued looking at Loka.
"The Psionic Guardian I placed on the first floor has been destroyed. The one who attacked us just now was Mercenary Tao…"
His voice was somewhat hoarse. After seeing that strange and ugly Avatar, he had felt a chill run through his entire body. The sight of Mercenary Tao selling Scarlet Drop Cards in the Space seemed to replay before his eyes.
He had no desire whatsoever to become one of those Scarlet Drop Cards displayed in a stall, haggled over by others.
Loka’s scalp tingled as well. He immediately interrupted his companion, who was still trying to cast healing magic.
"We’ll relocate first. This place is too bizarre. Let Mercenary Tao run into those filthy things before he finds us!"
Seeing that Loka remained fairly calm, the others found their backbone again and quickly began retreating upstairs.
With time running out, they hesitated at the stairwell before ultimately turning together toward the elevator.
Earlier, when they had reached the elevator, Short Hair had rejected the idea of taking it. His Spiritual Perception was quite high, and those elevators gave him an extremely bad feeling.
But Mercenary Tao was now only one or two floors away from them, likely no more than a few dozen meters in a straight line.
With the other party’s abilities, once he found them, he would probably need only a few breaths to smash through every obstacle and reach them.
"Go. Take the elevator!"
Psionic Communication had already linked them all together, and Short Hair was the first to suggest taking the elevator.
Spiritual Perception could help him sense danger in ordinary environments, but in such a special place, it only kept his nerves taut.
He felt that something terrifying was likely hiding in the elevator, but the Mercenary Tao downstairs also did not register as anything remotely human in his senses.
He was like a collection of countless negative emotions, radiating a savage, bloody aura.
They pressed the elevator button.
Ding~
With a crisp arrival chime, the elevator doors opened.
The inside was brightly lit, and everyone relaxed slightly. The moment they stepped in and the doors closed, Short Hair immediately smashed the mirror inside the elevator.
As the elevator doors shut, Loka saw a figure in a pink robe silently appear at the entrance. Their eyes met, and the smile in that person’s gaze nearly stopped his breathing.
