Heading to the Police Station
Fully armed, the group left through the back door of the Gun Shop. Following Robert Kendo’s directions, they could make their way through the alleys from the rear of his shop to somewhere near the Police Station. With the main roads impassable, they seemed to have no other choice.
Leon carried a shotgun as he led the way. He insisted on scouting ahead for everyone, and no one objected. At the very least, he was wearing a full set of gear and had some protection, unlike the others in ordinary clothes.
Claire’s outfit was especially concerning: a sleeveless denim vest and hot pants, with her arms and legs completely exposed. If a zombie ambushed her and took a bite, she would be crippled even if she survived, and there was a good chance she would be infected with the virus.
Yinsen remembered that the T-Virus was not one hundred percent infectious. Roughly one person in ten was immune to it. That was why, despite the devastating outbreak in Raccoon City, there were still many uninfected survivors, and quite a few people had managed to escape this living hell.
Leon and Claire had never specifically mentioned whether they were immune, but it was fairly likely that they were.
One thing was certain: Yinsen definitely was not afraid of the T-Virus.
"Which way should we go next?"
After weaving through the alleys for a while, Leon realized he had no way of telling which direction they were headed. He could only turn to Robert Kendo behind him, hoping the gun shop owner would point the way.
Robert took a quick look around, then helplessly shook his head. "A lot of the roads are blocked. We may have to take a detour."
Although the nearest route was no longer passable, that was no problem for local Robert. He quickly pointed out a new route, and the group continued onward cautiously.
The path was difficult to traverse, but compared to the zombies and various monsters everywhere on the main streets, only a few scattered zombies wandered here. Leon did not need anyone else’s help or even his gun. With the Fire Axe in his hands, he cleared a relatively safe path for everyone.
"Young man, you’ll become a reliable police officer."
"Thank you for the compliment, but right now, my only hope is to get everyone safely to the Police Station."
Yinsen shook his head inwardly. He had been looking around constantly, but he had kept watch over everyone and had not missed the conversation between the two men ahead. Hearing Leon’s words, he decided to pour a little cold water on them.
"We shouldn’t be far from the Police Station, right?"
Robert did not understand why he was asking, but he nodded anyway. "If some roads hadn’t been blocked, we should have reached the Police Station already."
Though they had taken a detour, the Police Station was actually very close in a straight line.
"At this distance, if the Police Station had established a defensive line, there couldn’t possibly be no gunfire."
Leon froze, and so did Robert and Claire.
Gunshots were loud. Even suppressed shots generally exceeded 110 decibels. At such a close distance, if the Police Station had established a defensive line, there had to have been fighting, considering how many zombies were in the city. That meant there should have been gunfire.
Yet they had been walking for at least twenty minutes since leaving the Gun Shop and had not heard a single shot. That did not look like a defensive line at all. Once they realized this, they all felt discouraged and began to hesitate over whether they should still go to the Police Station.
Yinsen knew why they reacted that way. The Police Station was practically the driving force keeping them moving, supporting their determination to press onward through such a dangerous environment. Yet before they had even learned whether that goal was good or bad, Yinsen had casually overturned it.
"No matter what, we still need to go take a look. We can’t turn back now."
When they had left the Gun Shop, they could already hear zombies battering against the front doors and the rolling shutter. From the sound alone, they could tell that a huge horde had gathered outside. Going out that way would be suicide.
So they had only one path left: keep moving forward, reach the Police Station first, and decide what to do next afterward.
"That’s right. Even if the Police Station has fallen too, we can at least replenish our ammunition, then leave this city together."
Leon recovered quickly. There was no better option now. He only hoped the situation at the Police Station was not too terrible. It would be best if there were still survivors there.
Even if Leon had not thought so, Claire would have strongly insisted on going to the Police Station. She had come to Raccoon City to find her brother. Her brother Chris had not contacted her for some time, and worried that something had happened to him, she had specifically come to Raccoon City.
Instead, she had encountered this disaster the moment she arrived. She seemed to understand why her brother had vanished without a word. She was terribly worried that something had happened to Chris, so she had to visit the Raccoon City Police Station. Only after confirming whether Chris was alive or dead would she be satisfied.
It had to be said that Claire’s nerves were incredibly tough. After encountering such danger, she had not considered turning around and running away. Instead, she became even more determined to head for the Police Station.
"You have to confirm what happened to your brother?"
Along the way, Claire explained why she had to go to the Police Station. This further strengthened Leon’s resolve to go there. When Robert heard that Claire was Chris’s sister, he also firmly supported her decision.
Then all three of them looked at Yinsen.
In their eyes, Yinsen might object, since he had been the one to suggest that the situation at the Police Station might not be optimistic. It seemed as though he did not support going there.
What they did not know was that Yinsen was the one who most strongly wanted to go to the Police Station. If he did not go there, how could he meet Sherry Birkin? And if he did not meet Sherry Birkin, how could he obtain the G-Virus?
"Why are you looking at me?" Yinsen shrugged. "Fine. I’ll go up front and scout with Leon."
The group smiled and continued carefully through the alleys. When they finally reached a street, the side of the Police Station was already right in front of them.
"As long as we get over these obstacles, we’ll be there."
A large bus was parked diagonally ahead, and together with the jumble of debris beside it, it completely blocked the road.
Fortunately, this was not a game world. They could climb over the scattered obstacles or pass directly through the bus. In any case, the barriers could not stop them. They only needed to be wary of the zombies in front of them and on the other side. The creatures had already noticed fresh human flesh and were swaying toward them.
"The zombies aren’t attacking the Police Station, and there isn’t a sound coming from inside. The situation may really be bad."
No one was stupid. Robert was especially glad now that he had not stubbornly stayed behind to defend his Gun Shop. He had hoped the police would bring the situation under control in a few days and rescue him, but now it seemed the police could barely protect themselves. Rescue was simply impossible.
Just as Robert was slightly distracted, he was suddenly yanked backward. He staggered several steps, only managing to steady himself when Claire supported him. Then he saw what had seemed to be a completely dead corpse on the ground suddenly move. If he had not been pulled away just then, that monster might have attacked him.
Yinsen, who had pulled Robert aside, raised his hand and smashed the zombie to death with an iron bar. He had few chances to show his true strength in this world. These zombies were incredibly weak and posed no threat to him at all. It would not be wrong to say he was here to experience the game plot in person.
Facing the cluster of zombies ahead, Yinsen made the iron pipe in his hands dance. As it whirled up and down, one zombie after another fell. Leon watched in admiration and even wondered whether Yinsen had specifically trained for this. How could his movements be so practiced?
"Have you trained in something? Swordsmanship? Staff Fighting?"
The training he had received at the police academy certainly had not included how to kill zombies with a Fire Axe, much less how to dominate the battlefield with nothing but an iron pipe like Yinsen. Leon thought he had done quite well just to struggle through killing one zombie, yet when he looked up, Yinsen had already smashed several more to death. Wasn’t that gap a little too huge?
"You’re just not suited to using that thing."
How could a handsome, charismatic male lead like Leon use something like a Fire Axe as a weapon? That was better suited for a rugged middle-aged man like Robert beside him. Leon needed a cooler weapon.
"I’ve studied some swordsmanship. From my professional perspective, you have a great talent for sword training. I suggest finding yourself a Two-Handed Greatsword. That would suit you better."
Leon thought Yinsen was joking. Where could they possibly find a Two-Handed Greatsword at a time like this? Still, he wondered whether he truly was not good with a Fire Axe, so he traded with Robert for an iron pipe. Like Yinsen, he gripped one end with both hands and swung it to smash or jab at the zombies’ heads.
He found it really was far easier to handle than the axe, making him wonder if he genuinely had a talent for swordsmanship.
The two men cleared the way in front, while the two women and the slightly older middle-aged man watched their rear and stayed alert for anything that might suddenly leap out. Working together and looking after one another, they soon reached the side entrance of the Police Station.
The door was locked, likely to keep out zombie attacks. But that did not stump them, especially since Claire actually knew how to pick locks. Using something she casually picked up from the roadside, she forced the lock open, and the group entered the Police Station without issue.
Entering through the side door, they could reach the main entrance by crossing a small garden. The few zombies along the way were dealt with by Yinsen and Leon as usual, and they finally entered the Police Station building.
"The situation… doesn’t seem very good."
The vast lobby of the Police Station was a complete mess, with all kinds of debris scattered everywhere. There were bloodstains all over the floor, and several beds had been set up. Judging from the large piles of used bandages and various first-aid supplies stacked nearby, this had probably been a temporary place for treating the injured.
No one paid attention to those things. What concerned them was that there was not a single person in sight.
