Kara’s Inner Demons and the Multiverse Theory
Little Barry Allen’s somewhat feeble explanation was clearly unable to convince Kara. As a devoted older cousin, Kara was fiercely protective of her beloved younger cousin and would even give her life to keep her safe.
Just like earlier, the reason she had been willing to risk her life in that test had undoubtedly been to avenge her cousin.
So when she learned that her cousin could have lived happily on Earth, only for everything to be ruined by one person’s "selfish actions," how could she not be furious?
Kara’s thoughts were simple. If Carl could truly live happily on Earth and be worshipped by its people, becoming the Superman they spoke of, then what did it matter if she did not exist in that world?
Zhang Ye had noticed this nearly pathological mentality long ago. After all, he had dealt with plenty of deranged mutants. For someone like Kara, who had been locked up and experimented on from the age of fifteen, it would have been miraculous if she had come out psychologically unscathed after all those years.
In Zhang Ye’s judgment, the pain of losing her homeland and family as a child had made Kara devote every reason for living to raising her younger cousin. Other than that, she truly could no longer find any reason to go on.
And she was the "older cousin." Taking care of her cousin, who had still been an infant, was her responsibility. At the time, the fifteen-year-old Kara had innocently believed that the two of them were Krypton’s last surviving people.
But what she had not expected was that after their sleep pods activated, her cousin had been intercepted halfway through the journey, while she herself crashed on Earth and became an experiment.
Years of imprisonment had carved the thought of "find a way out, find my cousin, and raise her" deep into her mind. It had gradually turned into a terrifying obsession, as if Kara had already died on the day she crashed on Earth, and the only meaning left in her life was her cousin.
"So I understood correctly. My cousin really didn’t have to die?" Kara’s eyes were slightly red as she looked at the unconscious Barry Allen, her gaze filled with hatred.
"Uh… well… this…"
Little Barry Allen was nearly frantic. He desperately shot looks at Bruce Wayne, but the old bat did not even glance at him. Instead, he sat silently to the side as though watching a show.
At that moment, Zhang Ye let out a faint sigh. His movement immediately drew Kara’s attention, while Little Barry Allen cast Zhang Ye a grateful look.
"Zhang, tell me. Is that really true?" Kara’s tone was somewhat cold.
"It isn’t." Zhang Ye looked at Kara. He could sense that Kara’s current state was indeed rather unstable. Perhaps she would help humanity kill General Zod to avenge her cousin, but afterward, she might turn around and seek revenge on Barry Allen as well.
Recalling DC’s interpretation of the Multiverse from the movie, Zhang Ye, like Batman, brought up the spaghetti analogy.
"Kara, you may have heard about parallel universes or the Multiverse on Krypton. I can tell you clearly that they are real. And speedsters truly can cause the Multiverse to split by changing the past."
"Mr. Bruce Wayne mentioned a theory earlier that I found quite interesting. After Barry Allen used the Speed Force to travel back and alter history, a branch of history appeared. But Mr. Wayne’s view was that altering history formed a pivot point, making changes along two lines. In other words, not only would the future be altered; even the past could change."
"So? What are you trying to say?" Kara frowned slightly.
"What I mean is, this theory is both right and wrong."
Zhang Ye paused, then voiced everything on his mind.
"Have any of you considered this? Once a timeline splits, it produces at least two futures. So which world would the Barry Allen who changed history return to? Was that so-called ‘altered’ universe really overwritten?"
As he spoke, Zhang Ye looked toward Little Barry Allen.
"Let me put it this way. If Barry Allen hadn’t accidentally come to this point in time and had instead traveled directly back to his own era, then answer me this: if you grew up in a complete family with both parents and reached Barry’s age, what would happen to you?"
"I…" Little Barry Allen was instantly dumbfounded by the question. He had no idea how to explain it.
Fortunately, Zhang Ye had not truly intended for Little Barry Allen to answer. He continued.
"There are only two explanations. Either Barry Allen never ‘returned’ to this universe’s future at all, or one day in the future, you will undergo Body Possession by the current Barry Allen. At that point, you will no longer be yourself."
The moment those words came out, Little Barry Allen could no longer sit still. He stared at Zhang Ye in shock as fear crept up from the depths of his heart. After all, no one wanted to be possessed by someone else, even if that someone was another version of themselves.
"But that’s only one possibility, isn’t it?" Batman spoke up at that moment.
"Yes, only one possibility. But I think it is more likely that this pivot point created more than two universes. One is the original universe, Barry’s universe. He simply disappeared from that universe and came here instead—a universe destined for destruction."
At this point, Zhang Ye glanced at Kara. "So I believe that in Barry’s original universe, your cousin is still alive. It’s just that in this universe, your cousin was unfortunate. My condolences."
Kara had been silent since then. Although she said nothing, her expression had clearly softened considerably.
Kara might have some psychological issues, but that did not mean she had lost her reason or was blindly irrational. She was simply somewhat stubborn and not so easily persuaded.
Everyone’s eyes were fixed on Kara. Although this girl looked young, she placed the greatest pressure on everyone present, so they all waited for her response.
Finally, Kara raised her head, met Zhang Ye’s eyes directly, and broke the silence.
"How do you prove that?"
"As you can see, Pietro and I are scavengers who roam the Multiverse. Since I know about you, your cousin, and Krypton, that naturally means I encountered you in other universes."
"Really?!" A glimmer of light finally returned to Kara’s eyes. "You’ve really seen my cousin?"
Zhang Ye knew Kara could tell whether he was lying, so he smiled faintly.
"Of course. In another universe, I saw your cousin kill General Zod with her own hands."
