Logan Didn’t Watch His Step
After returning to the Goddess of Dawn, Yinsen did not immediately activate the teleportation.
He first took a stroll around the ship, then dragged out a lounge chair and basked in the sun on the deck for a while. He had the Goddess of Dawn race across the vast ocean for some time, looking as though he had forgotten his plan and come out for a vacation.
"Are you planning to relax properly?"
"No."
Yinsen lay there comfortably, wearing sunglasses.
"I’m just thinking over our next move."
"Haven’t we already decided which world we’re going to?"
Ada was very interested in how Yinsen knew information about the target worlds, but no matter how she investigated, she found that this secret seemed to be known only to Yinsen. No one else understood anything about it.
"Yes, but the specific course of action needs careful thought."
The Mummy World did not seem particularly dangerous. Imhotep was a powerful priest, but as long as he was not allowed to revive, it was merely a backward era shortly after World War I.
They were also heading to Egypt. Egypt in that era was not at the center of civilization and lagged far behind those powerful nations.
Backward places came with many inconveniences, but they also had certain advantages.
No one would care about Yinsen’s identities. As long as they had enough money, they could solve any trouble.
Hamunaptra was located in an uninhabited region of the desert. It did not matter how much of a commotion he caused there. There were no military satellites filling the skies in that era, so he did not need to worry about being photographed and becoming a target of special attention for certain countries.
With the various abilities Yinsen currently possessed, he was not afraid of being watched, but it would still be troublesome. That was why he behaved with sufficient restraint in most worlds.
"So, what have you thought of so far?"
Yinsen merely smiled without answering. Many things were not convenient to reveal, especially to an elite spy like Ada.
Perhaps it was simply her nature. She wanted to investigate everything thoroughly. Yinsen had long noticed that after coming aboard, Ada had been trying hard to understand everything. He also knew that she was especially concerned with how he knew so much intelligence about different worlds.
This secret could be shared with trustworthy companions in the future, but for now, he could not tell anyone.
As for his plan for the Mummy World, he had been recalling the entire plot of that world.
Although his Mental Power had been strengthened and he could recall memories from his previous life in great detail, when he did not normally use those memories, they were like things piled in the corner of a warehouse. He needed to put in some effort to dig them out and organize them before using them.
The story of The Mummy was not complicated, which was also a characteristic of commercial blockbusters.
A relatively simple Main Storyline, clear character relationships, and spectacular special effects.
For Yinsen’s current situation, the advantage was that he did not need to waste too much time sorting through a messy plot and character backgrounds. He only needed to analyze which plot points were important to him.
What would happen in the Mummy World could be summed up simply: Evelyn Carnahan, a woman devoted to archaeology, set her sights on the legendary City of the Dead, Hamunaptra, after her brother Jonathan Carnahan accidentally(?) obtained a key and map. Wanting to find that legendary pyramid, she embarked on a magical adventure.
At first, Yinsen thought that as long as he found Jonathan in advance and took away the key and map, there would be no need for the female lead, Evelyn. After all, that woman had done nothing but cause trouble throughout the entire plot.
But then he awkwardly discovered a problem. It seemed he could not go without bringing Evelyn, because the two Scriptures he wanted were both written in Ancient Egyptian.
Yinsen knew many languages, but Ancient Egyptian was not among them.
When he had learned multiple languages, he had considered that he would need to travel through many worlds, so he had prioritized languages he might actually use.
Besides that, learning Kamar-Taj’s magic required studying some relatively obscure languages, but Ancient Egyptian was not among them either.
Not only had he never learned it, but there was not even anything related to the Ancient Egyptian Language in his collection of books. Even if he wanted to study it temporarily, he had no materials or textbooks.
"So Evelyn still has to come along."
Alternatively, he could find Evelyn in advance and pay her to teach him Ancient Egyptian. With Yinsen’s current learning ability, it should not take much time.
The troublesome part was that he was uncertain about the time he would arrive. If it was a little earlier, that would be fine. He could intercept the key containing the map beforehand.
If it was a little later, or if he arrived right when that part of the plot began, he probably would not have time to learn in advance. Taking the key would not be difficult, of course, but who would he find to learn Ancient Egyptian from afterward?
"There seems to be an archaeologist in that group of Americans."
Only after lying there and analyzing all the possibilities did Yinsen stand up again. He stretched lazily and looked at Ada standing beside him.
"Get a good night’s rest. We leave early tomorrow morning. Once we get there, we won’t have such comfortable opportunities to rest."
Only Ada would be accompanying him on this trip. After fulfilling Old Charles’s request, Logan finally let out a long breath. The weight pressing on his heart had been lifted, and he felt much more relaxed.
At the same time, he no longer wanted to run around everywhere. Especially after hearing that the next world was Egypt and that he would have to suffer in the desert, he said he would stay on the ship.
Loki was still not coming. He was simply waiting for Yinsen to finish handling these trivial matters and take him home. He was eagerly looking forward to giving his father and brother a huge surprise upon returning, and he did not want to waste time in those random worlds.
Selene had no interest in spending a year traveling through the desert either, much less Annette. She had no interest in any world. The only thing she cared about was whether Yinsen would bring back anything interesting this time. Unfortunately, Yinsen had not brought back any mutant genes from his previous trip to the X-Men world.
After a good night’s rest, only Ada and someone who had said he was not going set out with Yinsen once more.
"I hope this trip satisfies you."
On the previous trip, Ada had done almost nothing. She had merely stayed in the mansion, spacing out, with no chance to use any of her abilities. It had been incredibly frustrating.
This time should be better, right?
Looking around at the surroundings, the dry, sandy, stiflingly hot environment was completely different from the damp conditions on the ship. She felt as though more than half the moisture in her body had evaporated in an instant.
"No wonder Selene didn’t want to come."
Forget vampires—even normal people would not like a place such as the desert, with its dry heat and yellow sand filling the sky. Egypt at this time could not be considered a clean or orderly city either, and the mixed smells in the air were far from pleasant.
"What about Logan? Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?"
Logan’s sense of smell was even sharper than that of ordinary people, so the strange odors in the air made him feel worse. He lit a cigar to make himself feel better. Perhaps the reason he always smoked cigars was because his sense of smell was too sensitive?
"I really didn’t want to come. I just didn’t watch where I stepped and happened to be standing in the Magic Array."
Yinsen shook his head speechlessly. Logan might indeed have not wanted to come at first, but when he thought of a place like Egypt, and remembered Yinsen mentioning that they might encounter a powerful priest, he had ultimately been too worried and followed along.
Perhaps he had no chance of defeating a priest who wielded powerful supernatural forces, but relying on his Undying Body, he believed he could help if Yinsen ran into trouble.
Whether it was holding off the enemy to buy Yinsen time or taking Yinsen and escaping when necessary, he was capable of both.
Compared to Ada, who had only recently joined and seemed to have plenty of ulterior thoughts, Logan felt that he was the more trustworthy one.
Yinsen knew why Logan had deliberately come along. He patted the companion who had been with him the longest, then carefully surveyed their surroundings.
"Looks like our luck isn’t too bad. We didn’t end up in Ancient Egypt more than three thousand years ago." (Saying it was more than three thousand years AD earlier was incorrect. It should have been more than seventeen hundred years BC, which was over three thousand years before the plot began.)
If they had gone there, they would likely have had to confront the Egyptian dynasty head-on. Otherwise, he could not think of any way to get those two Scriptures.
He could steal them, of course, but conflict would still be unavoidable in the end.
In 1923, there was no need to worry about fighting an entire country. The competitors he had to face were merely a clumsy archaeologist who caused trouble all day, a veteran with decent combat experience, and a greedy thief skilled at stealing.
"Oh, and a bunch of Americans."
After asking around nearby, Yinsen learned the location of the Cairo Museum and led Logan and Ada toward their destination.
Although he knew he was in 1923, he still could not determine the exact point in time. He would have to see the female lead, Evelyn, to know.
Unexpectedly, after finally finding the Cairo Museum and reaching the curator’s office door, he saw Evelyn and her brother Jonathan kneeling on the ground, constantly beating at a burning map.
Yinsen was utterly speechless at the sight. Why had the timing worked out so perfectly? He had previously thought that if he found the siblings a step earlier and got the map and key, there would be no need to seek out the male lead, Rick O’Connell, to guide them.
Yet the moment he found the two of them, he saw the scene where the most important part of the map was burned away.
Of course, he knew that the museum curator had deliberately burned the map, because Curator Terence Bey was also one of the Medjai. His duty was to protect Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, and ensure it was never discovered by the world.
As Terence Bey smugly watched the map he had ruined, he noticed Yinsen and the others. Still wearing a self-satisfied smile, he asked why they had come, only to hear the words he least wanted to hear.
"I’m going to Hamunaptra."
