Scraping Virus Samples
As Yinsen’s Mental Power and magical power grew stronger, small spells like Mage Hand became easier and easier to use. Its range expanded, and it could perform more complex movements instead of merely picking up small objects.
Snapping the chain of Sherry’s pendant and then "taking" it in front of Yinsen was now something he could accomplish with a mere thought. Even the handgun Annette drew at once was casually "snatched" away by him.
"Yinsen?"
Leon did not quite know what to do. It seemed he should stop Yinsen, but he knew that with his level of combat ability, this Mage could probably take him out with a wave of his hand.
In the end, his sense of justice prevailed. Leon did not back down because of the overwhelming disparity in strength and firmly stepped in front of Yinsen.
"What are you trying to do?"
Yinsen toyed with the pendant in his hand, quickly unlocked its mechanism, and removed the G-Virus Sample hidden inside.
All of this happened right before everyone’s eyes. Only then did they realize that the pendant Sherry had been wearing around her neck had been hiding such a secret.
"What is that?"
"G!"
One letter was enough for everyone to understand what it was.
Annette’s expression darkened terribly. She could not understand how this man knew about this secret. Worse still, she had lost her weapon. Fortunately, that young police officer had an excessive sense of justice and presumably would not let the man named Yinsen simply take the sample away.
Another person had her eyes fixed on the G-Virus Sample: Ada. But while she was still thinking about how to get her hands on it, she saw the sample in Yinsen’s hand suddenly vanish.
It disappeared into thin air. At that moment, everyone’s attention was focused on the terrifying virus sample, yet no one saw how it had disappeared.
"I’ve got the G-Virus. Now I only need the other viruses collected in your laboratory."
"You already have G. What do you need the other viruses for?"
Annette shielded Sherry behind her. She might not have been a good person, but she still worried about her daughter’s safety. With the situation turning bad, she hoped Sherry would not be harmed.
As for Sherry… she still did not understand what was happening. But the big brother who had protected her earlier seemed to be a bad person, so she hid behind her mother’s legs and glared angrily at Yinsen.
"Don’t look at me like that. I won’t take your things for nothing."
The adults did not believe that, but it had some effect on the child. At the very least, the anger in Sherry’s eyes seemed to lessen a little, though she still regarded Yinsen with considerable hostility.
Meanwhile, Leon remained firmly in front of Yinsen. He wanted to find out exactly what Yinsen intended to do.
"Yinsen, what exactly do you want?"
"I want to collect virus samples and use them for research."
"Virus… research…"
Hearing those two words, Leon thought only of the city above them that had already become hell.
"Can’t you see that this kind of thing only brings disaster?"
Yinsen nodded. He agreed with that completely. The Bio-Viruses developed by Umbrella Corporation could indeed bring only disaster, because they were essentially researching biological weapons.
What could weapons bring besides disaster? That was their very purpose.
"I am different from Umbrella Corporation. I only need viruses to strengthen myself, or rather, to let myself evolve." Yinsen made it clear that he was not one of Umbrella Corporation’s people. He said this for Annette’s sake, since she now harbored considerable hostility toward everyone from Umbrella Corporation.
Leon wanted to say more, but Yinsen waved him off. "You can’t persuade me, because I know what I’m doing, and I’ve always walked my own path with resolve. If you want to stop me, you’ll have to defeat me first… and forgive me for saying so, but you don’t have that ability."
"Even so, I have to stop you."
Just as Leon raised his weapon, something cold pressed against his head. Of course, he knew what it was. Only then did he remember that Yinsen was not alone. The woman named Selene was with him.
"No need to get so worked up. I only want a few virus samples… Once I get what I want, I’ll leave this world. Even if a disaster breaks out, it won’t have anything to do with you."
Yinsen gestured for Selene to lower her gun. Because of this series of changes, everyone was highly agitated. Claire and Robert had also raised their weapons, as if a conflict could erupt at any moment.
One thing was certain: aside from Yinsen and Selene, none of the people present would end well if all those weapons started firing wildly.
Annette clearly realized this. Perhaps she could not tell that Yinsen was unafraid of such a situation, but she was worried about her daughter being hurt, so she decisively gave in.
"Fine. I’ll take you to get those samples."
The only thing that mattered most to her was the G-Virus, and it was already in Yinsen’s hands. As for the remaining ordinary viruses, she did not care about them at all.
Seeing that the situation was unfavorable, she did not mind handing those things over to Yinsen, so long as he kept his promise and did not harm Sherry.
Annette chose to compromise. Although Leon wanted to stop her, there was nothing he could do. He could only follow along in frustration and see what Yinsen was really up to.
"You really don’t need to worry. I’ve researched similar viruses before. I even turned that stuff into cigars and cigarettes. Smoke one every day, and it refreshes your mind and increases your Mental Power."
Leon felt that Yinsen was just messing with him. How had he managed to put viruses and cigars together?
"Unfortunately, I used up the last of my stock. Otherwise, I could have given you some."
"I’ll pass. I don’t want to turn into a monster."
"A monster?" Yinsen had to correct Leon’s thinking. "Not all viruses are harmful. Used properly, they can make people better—for example, all kinds of vaccines."
Using knowledge the other party could understand made it easier to persuade him. Yinsen also emphasized that only by mastering viruses could one more easily develop vaccines and even cures. Did Leon expect that after a virus leak on such a massive scale, areas outside Raccoon City would remain completely unaffected?
Even if Raccoon City was located in a relatively remote area, and the United States itself was vast and sparsely populated, that possibility could not be ignored—more importantly, Umbrella Corporation, that enormous conglomerate, still existed intact. Who knew how many similar things they had hidden away?
"If possible, you’d better take some samples and hand them over to an organization capable of making proper use of them."
With Leon’s personality, there was no question that he would hand them over to the government. If nothing unexpected happened, after escaping Raccoon City’s horrifying environment and uncovering the truth along the way, Leon would still catch the attention of the higher-ups, be trained into an elite agent, and embark on the path of shining brightly.
Though he still felt there was much wrong with it, Leon had to admit that Yinsen made sense. Thus, throughout the rest of the journey, Leon remained silent. Perhaps he was struggling internally over what he should do.
In addition, Annette, who had never known much about Yinsen, learned from her daughter and Claire about Yinsen’s true identity.
"A Mage from a Parallel Universe? What is that, a joke? This is the last time I want to hear such a bad joke."
As for the abilities Yinsen had displayed earlier, she would rather believe that some major corporation had developed a special device, or even produced drugs that could induce superpowers. She absolutely refused to believe in something so unscientific.
"Science? What is science?"
Yinsen had been paying attention to their conversation, so when Annette questioned his identity, he had to demonstrate something.
He held a fireball in his right hand and a Water Orb in his left. These two elements, which Yinsen had completely mastered, could be controlled freely by him.
"Things scientists considered unscientific centuries ago have now been incorporated into the framework of science. What you consider unscientific is merely knowledge I possess that you do not understand."
Annette’s eyes widened, and she even reached out to touch the Water Orb. It felt no different from putting her hand into water. As for the fireball? She was not that foolish. She could feel its scorching heat just by getting close, and she had no masochistic tendencies.
"So what she said was true?"
"Of course it’s true. What would I gain from lying about something like this?"
There really seemed to be no benefit, and such a claim was simply too easy to doubt. Aside from being mistaken for a lunatic, it had almost no other effect. Even though Yinsen had displayed all sorts of miraculous methods, most people here still did not believe he came from another world.
Annette suddenly fell silent. She seemed to be thinking about something. Yinsen did not have Mind Reading Ability, so naturally he did not know what she was thinking at the moment. However, he could sense that things became much smoother afterward, and the group moved through the research facility far more quickly.
Although Annette had previously agreed under duress to lead Yinsen in collecting various Virus Samples, she had still been trying to stall for time so she could think of a good countermeasure.
But no matter what kind of monster they encountered, Yinsen or that quiet woman dealt with it easily. Annette realized that those monsters could not trouble him at all.
After Yinsen once again emphasized that he came from Other Worlds, Annette seemed to become much more proactive. She even pointed out places where valuable samples were hidden. Besides some irreplaceable accidental products, there was also a Progenitor Virus sample.
After thoroughly scraping the research facility, Annette told Yinsen that he had already obtained all the valuable Virus Samples. The rest were ordinary T-Virus samples, and one of those would be enough.
"You can state your request now. You’re being so cooperative—you must want something, right?"
