Setting Things Right

One week later. Western New York State. The sky was blue with white clouds, and the sun blazed fiercely. The temperature exceeded thirty-six degrees Celsius, while the heat distorted the air above the ground. Lizards and insects chirped beside the highway, their irritating calls made even more grating by the scorching weather. A convoy of seven vehicles traveled along Highway 6 through the wilderness. Every one of them was a modified, broad, heavy, bulletproof dark-green SUV.
