#295
Tearing Apart the Undersea Colossus Carlson
Mera felt deeply uncomfortable.
Queen Atlanna’s blatant double standards made her feel utterly unfamiliar with her.
Even so, she suppressed her discomfort and introduced Beckett, who stood beside her.
"Wait, you came here looking for the Golden Trident?"
After hearing Mera explain why the two of them had come to the Trench Kingdom, Atlanna was somewhat surprised.
Mera was the princess of Zebel, while according to Mera, Beckett was the Son of Titan.
Of the two, Mera was at least a sea-dweller, but Beckett did not even possess the identity of one.
"Yes, Queen Atlanna."
"After Orm’s death, Atlantis has been left without a leader. My father intends to use this opportunity to seize complete control of Atlantis and launch an all-out assault on the surface."
"Only by finding the Golden Trident can I stop my father."
Mera concisely explained how she had fallen out with her father, making Atlanna furrow her brow.
She noticed Mera’s choice of words.
It was "she," not "he."
"Do you want to become the ruler of the Seven Seas, Mera?"
"No, I don’t want to become the ruler of the Seven Seas. But if I want to stop my father, there is only one way."
"I was once lost too. I thought Arthur was more suited to be King of the Seas than I was. But Beckett was right—if I have my own ideas, why shouldn’t I try becoming queen myself?"
"A person can’t always place their hopes on others, can they?"
At that moment, Mera radiated confidence from head to toe.
Who said only men could become kings?
I have the ability and the status. I can do it too!
"That was what my father said, not me," Beckett added solemnly beside Mera.
Mera: "…"
"Since you have that confidence, come with me, child."
In the end, Atlanna did not ask why Mera had not brought Arthur along.
Her child was merely her child; he had nothing whatsoever to do with Mera herself.
If she asked that question, Mera would certainly feel as though she were being treated as Arthur’s accessory.
Atlanna was not that foolish.
"Your guess was correct. This truly is the burial place of the first King of Atlantis."
"The Golden Trident is here as well."
"However, a terrifying beast named Carlson has been guarding it, guarding the first King of Atlantis."
"If you wish to obtain the Golden Trident, you must pass that beast’s trial, Mera."
Double standards aside, Atlanna could still distinguish right from wrong when it came to major matters.
She did not want to see Atlantis go to war with the surface either, so she did not hide anything and directly brought Beckett and Mera to the small island where she lived.
Besides, the Trench people were already gone. If Mera failed, couldn’t she simply tell her to bring Arthur Curry here to try?
"There is a small waterfall on this island. Passing through it will take you to the burial place of the first King of Atlantis."
"Listen, Mera. Carlson is dangerous. If you feel you can’t pass the trial, don’t force yourself."
"Come back out immediately. I don’t want to see you die, understand?"
Atlanna warned them after leading Beckett and Mera to the waterfall.
"Mm."
After Atlanna had spent the entire journey instilling in her the terror of the undersea colossus Carlson, Mera realized only at the moment of departure that her palms were slick with sweat.
"Beckett?"
Mera took a few steps forward, then stopped and turned to look at Beckett, who was leaning against a large tree.
"Tch. Don’t die."
"Don’t forget, you’re the only one who knows where the Mother Box is."
Beckett curled his lip and added an explanation about the Mother Box according to the prompt on Woz’s panel.
Inside the bracelet space, Woz held a copy of "A Complete History of Romance," pushed up his glasses, and rapidly recorded every move Mera and Beckett made.
These were records it had never seen before. They were worth collecting.
Mera smiled like a blooming flower.
Just as she prepared to pass through the waterfall, she saw Beckett toss something at her.
"Woz gave it to you. It can automatically sound an alarm if you encounter danger," Beckett said truthfully, while Mera listened intently.
One dared to say it, while the other did not believe it.
Splash!
Her body, wrapped in a skintight suit, plunged straight through the waterfall, sending water spraying everywhere!
"Beckett, right?"
"How long have you known Mera?"
After Mera entered, Atlanna turned her gaze toward Beckett, who was alone outside.
"Shut up."
Beckett’s response was far from polite. In fact, it was exceptionally rude.
Atlanna: ???
His icy aura of keeping strangers away left Atlanna completely bewildered.
She had once been Queen of Atlantis and considered herself highly experienced, believing she had seen every sort of situation.
But now she realized that she truly had never seen anything like this.
He was far inferior to her child. How had Mera taken a liking to him?
Atlanna sank into confusion.
"Alarm, alarm."
"His Highness Beckett, Lady Mera has encountered the undersea colossus Carlson. According to the results of simulated battle models, Lady Mera is in danger of losing her life."
A sapphire-blue bipedal robotic raccoon appeared before Beckett.
Under Atlanna’s astonished gaze, Beckett vanished directly before her eyes.
Water splashed wildly before the waterfall…
"Aaargh!!!!"
A resounding cry of pain echoed clearly through the waterfall and across the entire island!
"WHO! ARE! YOU!"
Within the incomparably dark burial place of the first King of Atlantis, a colossal beast wielding numerous tentacles roared in pain.
Its muscular body was a full two thousand meters tall, with hermit crab-like foreclaws and several squid-like tentacles beneath it.
Before its hideous, ugly head, Beckett floated silently, black-haired and black-eyed.
This was the sight Atlanna saw after passing through the waterfall.
Mera, who had entered earlier, lay amid the ruins, occasionally opening and closing her mouth and eyes. Clearly, she had suffered badly.
"Woz."
"No relevant information was found, His Highness Beckett." Woz truly had not found any records on Carlson.
This creature was from an extraordinarily ancient era.
"Forget it. Just kill it."
Beckett glanced at Mera on the ground and neither dodged nor evaded as Carlson’s enraged crab claw smashed down onto him…
He did not budge an inch.
"Bzzzt…"
The blue arcs of electricity that emerged across Beckett’s body filled Carlson, who had lived for who knew how long, with fear from the depths of his heart.
Whoosh!
Its dense mass of tentacles prepared to pull it away from Beckett, but Beckett had firmly seized both of its pincers, leaving it unable to move.
"Die."
When he raised his eyes again, his hair was already golden and his eyes jade-green.
A roaring shockwave, sharp as a blade, tore through Carlson’s two-thousand-meter-tall body along Beckett’s arms and split it in half!
Splurt!
Blood and flesh sprayed everywhere, even dyeing the throne behind the Golden Trident red!
"Celebrate!"
"The great Son of Titan! His Highness Beckett, the Lord of Chitauri Prime, revered by countless people!"
"At this very moment, the mysterious colossus Carlson is utterly powerless before him!"
"This is…"
Holding "The Complete Collection of His Highness Beckett’s Celebration Lines" and wearing a gray scarf around its neck, the robotic cat Woz excitedly sprang out of the bracelet space. Its long-prepared congratulatory speech echoed through the ruins of the former Trench Kingdom with passionate fervor!
Wonderful!
Woz silently gave its own performance a thumbs-up.
