Chapter 279
"Long time no see, Sif." Once aboard the plane, Thor naturally greeted Sif first. After all, they were old acquaintances who had known each other for over a thousand years.
"Thor…" Sif hurried over to stand before Thor, but that was all. She made no further move.
The people around them could only fret anxiously. Forget Playboy Tony Stark—even the rather innocent Captain America could see what Sif was thinking. And they all had the same thought…
Girl, hurry up and hug him! You’re usually so bold and straightforward, so why are you being so awkward at such a crucial moment? At this rate, when will you ever get your happy ending?
"Also, I need to apologize to you," Thor continued. "The reason I left you on Earth was because you were unconscious at the time."
Hearing that, Sif shifted her gaze from Thor’s face and shot Evenson a resentful glance.
"I didn’t know what I would encounter after returning to Asgard, so I couldn’t take you into danger with me." Thor spoke sincerely. "After that, Fandral and the others and I were all worried about you."
"It’s alright. I understand." Sif smiled, though her heart rippled with emotion. Thor had actually missed her. The feeling was simply wonderful.
Missed her? Evenson curled his lip beside them. You ignored her fifteen minutes ago, alright? And now you’re saying you were thinking about her all the time. If I didn’t know how big your brain was, I’d really think you were some smooth-talking expert at picking up girls.
But seeing Sif’s blissful smile, Evenson was truly exasperated by her lack of initiative. That was all it took to win you over? Sigh, I’d better give you a hand, or if you get upset again, you’ll go back to forcing booze down my throat.
"Ah!" Evenson walked behind Sif and suddenly cried out. As though he had slipped, he fell toward the floor, wildly flailing his arms as he gave Sif a hard shove.
"Oh…" Completely unprepared, Sif was shoved straight into Thor’s arms. Thor instinctively held her. It should have been a happy ending for everyone—my ass!
Evenson, who had meant to do a good deed, had never expected Thor’s reflexes to be so abnormal. When Thor saw Evenson cry out and fall, while Sif had clearly been shoved, his battle-honed instincts immediately supplied one phrase: enemy attack!
He wrapped his left arm around Sif and smoothly pulled her aside. With his right hand, he raised Thor’s Hammer. With a crack, lightning struck the warhammer, and powerful lightning immediately coiled around it. Thor’s face was full of vigilance as he prepared to respond to a sudden attack at any moment.
"What are you looking at? Hurry up and get me down!" After a moment, Evenson said to everyone with a sour expression.
Thor quickly realized it was a misunderstanding and that he had overreacted. But don’t forget, he had instinctively summoned lightning—and they were currently aboard a plane. Thus, the lightning blasted a hole through the plane’s ceiling.
Because of the air pressure, the hole generated a powerful suction force. Even more unfortunately, Evenson, who had been pretending to fall, happened to be lying directly beneath it, so…
"I think you suit being up there." Tony looked amusedly at Evenson, who was stuck to the ceiling. Fortunately, the hole was not very large. Otherwise, he would have been sucked right out.
"I told you that you’re actually darker than Nick Fury, but you wouldn’t admit it. What do you say now?" Carter took the chance to joke.
Evenson currently had Demon Skin activated. Otherwise, an ordinary body would have long since died under that powerful suction. Still, he did indeed look pitch-black all over.
Hearing that, Evenson, still stuck to the ceiling, immediately shouted in rebuttal, "This is the noble color of obsidian! It is a completely different concept from Nick Fury’s African black. Please don’t confuse the two."
In the end, Captain America was the decent one. He went over, pulled Evenson down, and used his shield to block the hole.
Evenson, left behind by everyone, sat off to one side looking utterly dead inside. Sure enough, helping others spread sugary romance was immoral. Now he was getting his comeuppance.
"Thank you." While no one was paying attention, Sif came to Evenson’s side and whispered softly. But before Evenson could say "you’re welcome," she added, "I’ll buy you a drink when we get back."
Evenson wanted to cry, but that was not the end of it. Black Widow suddenly dealt him another blow. "You’d better discuss who should take responsibility for a plane worth several hundred million being damaged outside of combat."
Everyone immediately turned to Thor. He quickly defended himself. "I thought we were under attack. It was a natural reaction."
Then everyone looked at poor, miserable Evenson. "My foot slipped. Is that my fault too?"
In short, everyone had their own reasoning, and they still had not reached a conclusion by the time they returned to the Helicarrier.
"Kid, what’s your name?" After everyone got off the plane, Evenson stopped the co-pilot—the guy wearing a full combat suit with his face covered, who had not said a single word the entire time.
"I am field agent number 89757, sir!" The agent immediately stood at attention and saluted. After all, Evenson now counted as part of the leadership.
Evenson nodded in satisfaction and asked with concern, "Do you have any connections?"
"No, sir!" the agent answered righteously. I passed layer upon layer of selection and became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. through my own abilities. I would never lower myself to seek connections and curry favor.
"Very good." Evenson was even more satisfied. He said kindly to the agent, "Then how about you take responsibility for the hole in the plane?"
Agent, I have three words I absolutely must say!
Evenson put on sunglasses, clenched a cigar between his teeth, painted the chain he usually used to leash Hubbs gold, and hung it around his neck. Hmph, young man, you are still too naive. You have not recognized the evil nature of this society at all. Let me knock some sense into you. Don’t thank me.
But before Evenson could return to the Helicarrier’s control center, Natasha walked over to meet him. "Come with me. The Director has a mission for me."
"What mission?" Evenson asked, silently praying that it had nothing to do with the plane.
"To draw Loki out." Natasha said it naturally.
"Isn’t that your specialty? Why drag me into it?" Evenson asked in confusion.
"The Director has crossed paths with Loki. He knows that guy is difficult to deal with." Natasha said seriously, "Loki always has some special tricks, so bringing someone who knows Magic is a good choice."
At that, Natasha moved closer to Evenson and asked quietly, somewhat embarrassed, "Do you know what Sarah likes about me? I can change it."
"Hm?" Evenson pretended to think for a moment before saying, "You could consider going without makeup, then straightening your hair and growing it out."
