Chapter 90: Pyramid
"What is this?"
Alice’s "Eyes" widened as she gazed at the magnificent structure before her.
But no one answered her question, because the two other figures beside her were also in shock.
To be honest, they were very familiar with the building that appeared before them, as they had seen such structures on television.
Pyramids.
Mysterious structures built in the Egyptian Desert; no one knew how the ancient pyramids were constructed, but that didn't stop them from marveling at them.
And now, the pyramid that appeared before them was much, much grander than the Egyptian pyramids they had seen on television.
But that wasn't the key issue; the key issue was, how could there be a pyramid here?
Alice had confirmed repeatedly that this was where Raccoon City once stood; the remains of the surrounding City could prove this point.
But this pyramid, built in the middle of the City, seemed so out of place.
Who built this pyramid? And why was it built in this location?
No one could answer their questions.
"Hank, why don't we just leave? This place is too strange. What if a group of aliens comes out and captures us?"
Colette tugged at Hank’s sleeve and said.
"—Since we’re already here, I feel unwilling to leave without finding Umbrella’s base. Besides, what if this pyramid was built by the Umbrella Corporation?"
Hank rubbed his bald, scaly head and said.
"Not necessarily. The Umbrella Corporation wouldn't do something so thankless."
Alice, who knew the Umbrella Corporation quite well, denied Hank’s statement.
"No matter what, I’m going in to take a look. If you don’t want to go in, you can leave. After all, it’s too dangerous here."
"You wait here."
Hank patted Colette’s shoulder and followed Alice towards the giant pyramid.
"I’m not a child anymore—"
Colette grumbled softly, but she didn’t disobediently follow along.
She once had a rebellious phase. At that time, as her power grew stronger, she started to resent being left behind every time he went out to find food or destroy an Umbrella base.
One time, she secretly followed behind Hank.
Initially, due to the distance, she wasn't discovered by Hank.
But as she got closer to Hank, she was, as expected, discovered by him, and then she was beaten by an enraged Hank!
After that, Colette never dared to anger Hank again, especially in times of crisis; she dared not defy Hank’s orders.
"You didn’t let me into the pyramid, but you didn’t say I couldn’t go to other places—"
Colette’s "Eyes" darted around, she looked left and right, and then randomly chose a direction to walk in.
Alice said that Umbrella’s base was in Raccoon City, but that didn’t mean the base was under that pyramid, did it?
Didn’t Alice say?
That pyramid might not have anything to do with the Umbrella Corporation, right?
So, Colette began searching for any suspicious traces in the surroundings.
And she really found something!
After a long detour, Colette discovered a path behind the pyramid.
A very strange path.
It felt like a path pressed down by countless giant pythons crawling over it, with elongated marks all along its length.
Colette followed the marks and arrived at a deep abyss!
Looking at the bottomless pit before her, hundreds of meters in diameter and of unknown depth, Colette fell silent.
This place… could that pyramid have been built from rocks dug out of this very spot?
Looking at the obvious cutting marks on the rock wall, Colette felt she had discovered the truth.
But she showed no joy; instead, she was filled with an inexplicable fear.
If Colette couldn't be sure just from those marks resembling crawling, then seeing the specially left downward curving steps in front of her, Colette finally confirmed that other Creatures must be living here.
And they should be a group of huge Creatures with tentacles and several meters tall.
Otherwise, the steps they left behind couldn't be so large.
After all, it was clear at a glance that they were not built to human standards.
Thump-thump-thump~
Colette couldn’t help but take half a step back. A pebble by her foot slid into the bottomless abyss ahead. The sound of the pebble hitting the rock wall, growing fainter and fainter, let Colette know that the depth of this abyss must be very great!
No, she had to go back and find Hank!
Even though Colette was gradually developing a somewhat fearless personality, facing this unknown, she didn’t dare to go down alone to her death.
She only felt secure enough when she was by Hank’s side.
On her way back, Colette frequently turned her head to look behind her.
Perhaps the psychological shadow cast by that deep pit was too heavy, causing her to constantly feel as if something was following her.
Colette began to regret why she hadn't listened to Hank and stayed put, otherwise, she wouldn't be in such a sorry state now.
"Colette, you're running off again."
A voice suppressing anger sounded in Colette’s ear.
In the past, an angry Hank made her afraid, but now, she felt a sense of security wash over her.
"Hank~"
Colette threw herself into Hank’s arms, almost crying.
"What’s wrong? Were you attacked?"
Seeing Colette’s tearful face, Hank’s fierce demeanor gradually softened.
Alice immediately drew her gun and became alert. "Is something following you?"
"I don't know." Colette wiped the tears from her "Eyes". "I found a deep pit over there, and that pit doesn't look like it was dug by humans."
Hank and Alice exchanged glances, both seeing the solemnity in each other’s "Eyes".
They had previously gone to see the pyramid and found that it was constructed entirely of massive stones about four meters high, and they had not found an entrance to the pyramid.
Rather than calling it a building, it was more like a place where building materials were stacked.
Mysteriously, both Hank and Alice came to this conclusion after observing the pyramid up close.
Upon hearing that Colette had found a deep pit, they walked towards it.
With Hank by her side, Colette’s fear had largely dissipated, and she proactively walked ahead to lead the way.
Then, they saw that bottomless pit!
"How on earth was this dug out?"
Alice murmured to herself.
At this moment, they all speculated whether the Umbrella Corporation had created some kind of biological weapon to dig this deep pit.
"Anyway, no one has been here for a long time, so it should be abandoned."
