He Is Superman! (Please Bookmark, Please Read On)
Across the boundless sea, waves surged like raging beasts.
Suddenly, a figure streaked through the sky at high speed.
As he flew past, a dense mist poured from his mouth.
Creak… creak…
As the white mist merged with the sea, an entire stretch of ocean instantly froze solid.
The waves that had surged like beasts were frozen in an instant, the spray and sea surface flash-frozen into a massive ice sculpture.
"Before, I could only be considered a fake Superman."
"But now, I can finally be considered the real Superman."
After casually testing the Freeze Breath he had just awakened, Peter felt that he could finally be called a true Superman.
The next moment, Peter accelerated sharply and flew toward his home in New York.
Without alerting anyone, Peter quickly returned to his bedroom through the second-floor window.
He rolled up the clothes he had swiped from some empty room, along with the crude cape made from red curtains behind him, and casually tossed them into the trash can.
Pretending that he had just gotten out of bed, Peter slowly walked downstairs.
"Good morning, Uncle Ben, Aunt May."
As he greeted Uncle Ben and Aunt May, Peter sat down at the dining table and picked up the breakfast on it.
"Morning, Peter…" The two of them were sitting on the sofa, staring at the television as they answered him without turning around.
Only then did Peter notice a very familiar figure on the television. "Hm, are they reporting on what happened last night?"
"Heh, it has nothing to do with me. I should fill my stomach first."
Peter paid no attention to what the television was saying. He picked up his breakfast and leisurely began eating, as though what had happened last night had nothing to do with him at all.
However, unlike Peter, who was currently enjoying a delicious breakfast at his leisure,
Captain George Stacy, who had rested for less than six hours that morning, was already fully dressed in a crisp captain’s uniform that radiated authority.
With a solemn expression, he stood at the podium.
"I am deeply sorry. On behalf of every officer in the NYPD, I sincerely apologize to everyone for the vicious incident that occurred last night."
After saying that, Captain George faced all the cameras without hesitation and bowed deeply in apology.
"The full details of last night’s incident…"
After a long while, he straightened up again and slowly began recounting the events of the previous night to the many reporters below, who had long since caught wind of the matter.
"Here, I offer a profound self-criticism regarding the way our police department previously handled this matter. At the same time, I announce that the warrant for Spider-Woman’s arrest is hereby completely revoked."
"Furthermore, I call on Spider-Woman to cooperate with the police to jointly maintain public safety, fight criminals, capture the culprit behind last night’s chaos, and create a city filled with harmony and freedom."
Inside the lavishly decorated owner’s office of the Daily Bugle building.
"Fuck! Have these people gone mad? They’re actually cooperating with a criminal who doesn’t even dare show her real face. This is an utter disgrace to the NYPD."
A middle-aged man with a mustache, dressed in a suit and holding an expensive Cuban Montecristo cigar between his lips, heard Captain George’s words on the television.
His body, which had been leaning back in a comfortable executive chair, suddenly sprang to its feet. The expensive cigar in his hand was viciously hurled to the floor.
Knock, knock, knock…
Just as he was fuming over what had happened, a knock sounded at the door.
"Come in."
After collecting himself and sitting back down in his executive chair, he slowly spoke.
"Mr. Jameson, this is the newspaper we just finished laying out. Would you like to see whether anything still needs revising?"
A slim female secretary in a business suit entered the office and handed a freshly printed newspaper to J. Jonah Jameson.
"Revise it. Rewrite every report about Spider-Woman."
After casually glancing over the newspaper, J. Jonah Jameson spoke without hesitation.
"But if we revise everything, we may not make today’s release deadline."
As his secretary, Betty Brant could not question her boss’s decision. She merely offered her suggestion symbolically.
"Revise it anyway. Tell every editor at the paper to write as quickly as possible about the ugly deal between the police department and Spider-Woman. Make sure the citizens understand that Spider-Woman is an evil criminal, not a hero protecting the city!"
"The NYPD cooperating with her means they’re in league with each other, two rotten sides of the same coin!"
"Oh, and have those editors come up with an eye-catching headline. It would be best if people felt the urge to buy the paper the moment they saw it."
After thinking briefly, J. Jonah Jameson came up with the general direction for the revisions.
In short, all he had to do was keep smearing Spider-Woman.
"Yes, boss. I’ll get right on it."
After hearing this, the secretary prepared to leave.
"Wait, don’t go yet!"
At that moment, J. Jonah Jameson turned his attention back to the television. His expression suddenly changed, and he sharply stopped the secretary who was about to leave.
At the police press conference.
As Captain George personally revoked the warrant for Spider-Woman’s arrest, every reporter present felt that this would be major news.
However, after one reporter raised his hand and was granted permission to ask a question, the venue instantly fell silent.
"Captain George, regarding last night’s events, I seem to have received some information that differs from your account. Or rather, you are hiding something from every citizen in this city!"
At the reporter’s words, the composed expression on George’s face instantly changed.
"Sorry, I will not answer that question…"
Before he could stop the reporter, the reporter quickly continued, "Someone claims that there were more than two superpowered individuals at the scene. There was also a superpowered individual capable of flight and possessing immense strength."
"And the police suspect that this newly appeared superpowered individual…"
"May be the famous comic-book hero—Superman…"
Before the reporter could finish, Captain George announced into the microphone with a grim expression, "I’m sorry, but this NYPD press conference is now over. Please leave in an orderly manner."
"Damn it, which bastard leaked the news?"
Although George had long known that this information could not be concealed for long, he had not expected reporters to learn of it the very next day—and ask about it at the press conference.
"Superman? How is that possible? How could he exist in real life?"
Some reporters at the scene expressed doubt about what the reporter had just said.
"Who is Superman? Some Hollywood star?"
This was clearly someone who had barely read comics as a child.
Amid the doubts and confusion of countless reporters, the venue instantly became incredibly noisy.
Even several uninformed officers responsible for maintaining order began whispering to one another.
"Oh my gosh, everyone look! What is that?"
As one reporter at the scene pointed toward the distant sky and cried out, everyone’s gaze instinctively followed the direction of his finger.
"Is it a bird? Or a plane?"
Someone could not help but speculate.
"Damn it, why did he show up at a time like this?!"
As George looked at the familiar figure in the sky, his expression could not have been uglier.
Whoosh!
The next moment, a broad, muscular figure shot over from the distant horizon.
Upon reaching the space above the crowd, he stopped instantly, as though completely unaffected by gravity or inertia.
He hovered in midair above everyone!
"My gosh, he’s Superman!"
