The People’s Cheers, the Citizens of Su City
Cang Nan clasped his fists excitedly. "Yes! General, you truly are a good man."
With that, Cang Nan left with the command token. Su Yu smiled. He had actually been praised as a good man…
Before long, Cang Nan gathered all the citizens of the border city. Standing atop a high platform in the center of the city and looking at the densely packed crowd below, he announced, "Citizens, I have good news for you. A general has arrived at our border city. His name is Su Yu. General Su has slain Zhao Que and the other nine, and their command tokens are now in my hands."
"Zhao Que is dead? Wonderful! Heaven truly has eyes!" an old man cried, tears streaming down his face.
A young man said, "What does this have to do with Heaven? It was clearly this general who did it. This general must be a truly good man!"
"Heh, how can you be sure this general doesn’t just want to monopolize the border city for himself?" a woman said with a scornful laugh.
Listening to the crowd’s heated discussion, Cang Nan immediately shouted, "Quiet! I’m not finished yet. General Su has ordered me to use the command tokens to let every one of you leave!"
"What? Wonderful! This is truly wonderful!"
"Wuwu… General Su is a good man, a good man indeed!"
"General Su! General Su! General Su!"
All the citizens of the border city began shouting.
Seeing this, Cang Nan revealed a pleased smile and continued, "General Su is taking the risk of being punished by the Heavenly Court to release us. I hope that from now on, all of you will conceal your identities and names. Do not allow yourselves to be captured again. And the longer we can keep this hidden from the Heavenly Court, the better."
A middle-aged man shouted, "Lord Cang Nan, rest assured. From today onward, I am a citizen of Su City. I have never heard of any border city!"
Everyone froze, then began shouting one after another, "From now on, I am a citizen of Su City!"
Cang Nan was dumbfounded. Su Yu, who had been watching from afar, was dumbfounded as well. Had I somehow become the lord of a city without even realizing it?
Though Cang Nan was somewhat bewildered, he was very happy. He had never imagined that one day, he too would be so cheered and admired.
"Everyone, quiet down. Hurry back and pack your belongings. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be waiting for you all at the Limitless Gate," Cang Nan said.
"Woo!"
The crowd cheered as they rushed toward their homes.
Su Yu walked onto the streets and watched them grow lively once more. As he walked, he came upon an old man leaning on a cane, staring at a pile of stones in the distance.
Su Yu asked in confusion, "Sir, what are you looking at?"
The old man raised a trembling hand and pointed at the pile of stones. "That is my son. My son was once an immortal soldier too. He died outside the Supreme Polarity Gate, but no one brought his body back. I truly hate my own uselessness. My son died, yet I couldn’t even bring back his remains."
As he spoke, tears streamed down the old man’s face. He was not one of the people who had been sealed away. It turned out that there were countless families of immortal soldiers in the border city. Their children had died outside, yet their bodies could not return. They were truly unwilling to accept it, and their hearts ached.
The reason for their grief and resentment was that if a body remained outside the Supreme Polarity Gate, their child could not be reincarnated. If the body could be brought back into the city within seven days of death, their child would be able to enter reincarnation.
Countless immortal soldiers had died on the battlefield, their corpses unable to return to the city, and thus vanished from this world forever. Su Yu listened to the old man for a long time. There were simply too many such unmarked graves in the border city.
Perhaps because these unmarked graves had become more and more numerous, most immortal soldiers had now lost their fighting spirit and no longer dared to leave the city to fend off enemies.
Not long after, Su Yu returned to the barracks. He sat alone on the training grounds, lost in thought, remaining there for an entire day and night.
He considered whether he truly was someone who saved the world. Ever since the Void Dominator had given him the Myriad Realms Divinity, he seemed to have treated saving the world as a task. Yet this time, when the people of the border city cheered his name, he had been genuinely happy. He had never felt this way before. Gradually, he was no longer treating this matter as a task.
The next day
All the citizens formed long lines and streamed toward the Limitless Gate. Cang Nan immediately shouted, "Everyone, don’t rush. Form nine lines. Go out one at a time, and don’t panic."
The citizens immediately formed nine lines. Cang Nan handed nine command tokens to the first nine people in line and said, "Take the command tokens, and you’ll be able to leave. Once you pass through the City Gate, throw the token to the next person. Continue like that, one after another. Do you understand?"
"We understand!" everyone shouted.
Cang Nan did not take out all ten command tokens because he was worried that someone might take one and run away. Naturally, he had to keep one for himself, so that if anyone fled, he could chase after them.
The long lines stretched from the Limitless Gate all the way to the Supreme Polarity Gate. Naturally, this caught the attention of the ninety-nine Great Luo Heavenly Immortals. Some said enviously, "I want to leave too. This new general is actually quite decent."
"Heh, just wait and see. He released these criminals from the border city without authorization. He’s definitely finished!" someone sneered.
"Whether he’s finished or not, we should be thinking about what to do when the Demon Clan attacks again. Are we really going out to fight them?" someone asked with a miserable expression.
Another person sneered. "Isn’t that easy? He only said we had to go out; he never said we had to fight to the bitter end. When the time comes, we’ll hide behind those immortal soldiers. If things go wrong, we’ll immediately retreat back into the city!"
The person beside him continued, "Then we’ll shut the City Gate. Heh heh, he’ll be done for. Let me tell you, Huanglong Zhenren’s men came by a couple of days ago and told Zhao Que and the others to get rid of Su Yu exactly as we just described. Once they succeeded, they would be transferred away. But Zhao Que and the others were truly idiots. They knew he was a Great Luo Golden Immortal, yet they still went looking for death."
"Since Zhao Que and the others failed to do it, if we succeed instead, do you think Huanglong Zhenren might be so pleased that he transfers us away?"
As he spoke, the man revealed a crafty smile.
The others’ eyes lit up. One of them said excitedly, "That might actually work!"
However, someone was still rather cautious and asked, "Wang Qiang, how did you two brothers learn about this?"
Wang Qiang smiled. "Have you forgotten our brothers’ divine ability? Once we hide ourselves, even ordinary Great Luo Golden Immortals can’t detect us! That day, we happened to see Huanglong Zhenren’s people entering the city, so we followed them out of curiosity and learned all this. So tell me, are you in or not?"
The crowd looked at one another, then answered in unison, "We’re in!"
They had no choice but to do it now. If they did not get rid of Su Yu, they feared that Su Yu might kill them someday. Even if they could not be transferred away, they still had to eliminate Su Yu.
